I use cigarettes to burn flags while riding motorcycles with no helmet on.

Are you talking about rebellious flag burning, or the proper disposal of a flag via separating the stars from the stripes and burning ceremoniously?

    I checked free expression, begrudgingly.

believe me, your burn a flag near me and you will get the mother of all Pimp Hands across the face (my version of free expression), but it should not be outlawed specifically by law, especially a federal one. I believe in limits to protests in terms of it hampering others lives, i.e. the scumbags that protest Iraq war deceased funerals and what not, but not the barring of said protest overall.

saying the word fire should not be outlawed, but yelling it in a crowded dark theater should be.

I also voted yes begrudgingly. I find it severely offensive, and would definitely react if I saw it.... but that doesn't mean you don't have the right to do it (unfortunately).
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

If you gotta choose between burning any old flag and burning the US constitution (meaning the one in the national archives), you gotta go with the flag.

My feeling is this, if you hate the country so much that you would burn its flag, GET THE **** OUT. Move. Leave. Stop suckin up my oxygen. Go somewhere else that you do like. Why would you stay in a country you have so much hatred for? To me it's the most chicken-****ted form of expression, they don't even have the courage of their convictions. "I hate this place, but um, I think I'll stay." It absolutely detroys their credibility.

In case you all haven't noticed, I'm a passionate person. If your passionate about your cause, do something about it at the polls. I'll bet none of these flag-burning a-holes even vote. I don't ever present a problem without some potential solutions, because otherwise it's just frickin whinning. Anybody can identify shortfalls---takes no skill--BUT, have the damn intestinal fortitude to offer some possible solutions.

Hundreds of thousands of REAL Americans have died in defense of what that flag symbolizes. If for no other reason, leave our flag alone as a tribute to them. If your country has no loyalty, it has nothing.

The reason I asked for no reply's is so I could get a realistic feel for how people felt about this topic, without anyone feeling singled out. I'm surprised by the results, and though I disagree, I can somewhat understand some of your points. Let me clear up some confusion; this isn't about a cloth flag, it's about the ideals it symbolizes. It's about duty, honor, country, and pride in our nation. If we have nothing else, we have each other, America, love it or leave it---you've got the freedom to pick.

I would hope that Americans would handle flag burning like they might have in the 1950's. You'd get a serious ass-whipping and pretty much be an outcast in your neighborhood---you know, good ol peer pressure.

Take your attitudes toward the government to the polls. Burning a flag isn't going to change a thing, and it is a dishonor to those who fought and died for what it stands for.

If I were running things, flag burning would get you deported. Plain and simple, don't like here? leave. Do you think you'd get your US citizenship if you stated to authorities that you burn the American flag? No, you wouldn't; so why should you get to stay if you do so later? Have the balls to pick up and leave this place if you want to, thats all I'm saying. Show your true passion for your cause, don't half-ass it.

I think it is a slap in the face of all Americans not just a protest against our gov.

I think it should be illegal to burn it in protest or at any organized gathering. (other than an oficial flag retirement ceremony.)

That said, I also fear that if we pass a law against burning our flag then there will be panty-waste's protesting to protect every nations flag on our soil. Which I would think was wrong. I should be allowed to burn some other countries flag in protest of their government or citizens because I choose not to live in their country.

Do you realize that between 1924 to 2000, the average voter turn-out for presidential elections was 55%. A little over half of our country votes, that's a problem. 45% of you are not even being heard...no wonder your pissed.

    GO VOTE.

I get the impression you think that if you believe flag burning shouldn't be illegal that it makes it okay to do it. I'm sure there are a handful here who think that way, but that's not why I voted yes.

Free speech in whatever form does have consequences. You can't just say things or do things and expect not to get reaction from it -- be it positive or negaive. You're free to criticize the asshats that burn the flag. What what does their burning the flag get viewed as by the vast majority of society? It's not in a positive light. All these people do is destroy whatever twisted message they had. I agree if they hate their country so much maybe they should get the hell out of it.

I guess I'm surprised that someone elses idiocy would shake your patriotism. They're only destroying their message.

I also don't want the misinformed voting. I don't agree with telling people to vote when they don't have an effing clue what they're voting for. You can't force people to care when they don't care.

Also, if a constitutional exception to the First Amendment is made, I would imagine that we would see more flags being burnt in one month than what we've seen in the history of the USA (remember 1989?).

I wonder how many flags get burned maliciously in the USA each year. I think the flag burners get WAY more publicity than they deserve, but I guess that is their point to get as much publicity as they can to champion whatever their cause is.

It's free speech, but... if you have to burn a flag to make your feelings known about where you live, it's time for you to live somewhere else.

If you denounce your "allegiance to the flag" you should lose your citizenship. Plain & simple. Have the courage of your convictions, take the consequences of your actions.

The most suprising thing is that 6 people don't have an opinion! I thought being opinionated was a mandatory requirement for this forum. :)

Well, with hindsight I should have put an option that wouldn't make flag burning a "crime" per se, but punishable by non-criminal means, ie deportation or whatever. I think that's where the "no opinions" come in.

Flag burning makes no sense to me. There are many other ways to get your point across, whatever it may be, and at the same time won't result in an immediate reaction of "what the ****", which usually ends up undermining what you've set out to accomplish (again, whatever that may be) in the first place.
