    Default Muse- Blackholes & Revelations

So Muse's new CD has come to my doorstop early and I was fortunate that I got a few hours a solid listening to it. Personally I feel they have taken a step in the right direction. Lead singer Bellamy has dropped his falsetto singing a notch lower, and developed more of a higher pitched "Bono" type sound. While his singing is different it was a tad ear fatiguing in Absolution. Not so in B&R.

They have also toned down their music some, and have made it more of a "pop" type album. Personally I liked the move because Absolution was so up and down. One minute your bangin your head and the next it's soft and cuddly. B&R has more of a mellow feel to it.

Personally I think it's a fantastic CD, and it improves in Absolution.

Ah see I LOVED Absolution because of just those qualities you named. I love his singing style because he has so much energy and is just so different, and I love all the varying tempos of the songs, mixes is up really well.

Absolution has been my favorite of their so far, and mainly for the reasons you just named. Of course I'll give the new one a listen and form my own opinion, but the way you've described it in terms of having a more 'pop' sound and him toning down his voice a bit makes me a bit nervous. I hope they're not 'evolving' into just another pop band...

All in all, I'm really looking forward to giving it a listen as I'm a big fan.

Yeah I was a little hard on absolution, maybe too hard. But after a while it just grates....but overall their sound is fantastic.

Yeah I definitely don't like this new CD as much as their other stuff. I'm going to give it a couple more listens, but at this point they're starting to sound like everyone else...

I found that i enjoyed Absolution and (even Origin of Symmetry and Showbiz) far more because of the variety and differing arrangement of the songs. The transition to a simpler, more-poppy style does not intrigue me very much. But its not surprising, Death Cab for Cutie was an incredible band until a major record label got a hold of them and over-produced their newest offering into un-interesting, unoriginal drivel...

I also plan on listening to the CD a few more times though, perhaps i'm being too critical after only hearing twice, we shall see. Muse is awesome though, so good call of the thread =)

It's not a bad CD really, it's just that none of the things I really like about this group is prevalent on this CD.

    Follow up:

Well I typically give a CD 3 tries before I claim that I don't like it and give it away. This has worked well, because there were ALOT of groups I wouldn't like if I just listened to a CD once and then moved on (Dave Matthews, Dream Theater, The Police, etc, etc...and even Muse (Absolution was painful to listen to the first time, now one of my favorite albums of all time)).

That didn't work with this album. I just don't like it. I think it's just too 'poppy' for me. I've listened to it several times, and it's my least favorite of theirs so far. I'm not one of those people who's going to say they sold out or abandoned their rooots or whatever...I just don't like this particular body of work.

I still love their other stuff and have high respect for them as musicians.

Anyone else have a similar experience, or do most of you guys like this one?

    LOL

I just found this album while unpacking the last box from the move a few months back. A year, and two radio hits, later, and I still don't like it. i feel like I'm listening to Casey Cassum's (sp) top 40 when I'm listening to this album.

My wife loves it though, so it does get some car play from time to time...
