Angry gas prices drop? not around here

Here in the West we're still paying over $3.05 for a gallon of gas. read on.....

(CNN) -- Gasoline prices plunged more than 21 cents a gallon over the past two weeks to a national average of $2.66 amid an abundant supply of fuel at service stations, a national survey said Sunday.

Lower demand for gas with the end of the summer driving season and a drop in crude oil prices combined to send prices downward across the United States, according to Trilby Lundberg, publisher of the "Lundberg Survey."

Lundberg, whose survey tallies prices every two to three weeks at about 5,000 gas stations in all 50 states, said gas prices were "punctured."

The average price of a gallon of gas has fallen nearly 37 cents a gallon in the last four weeks, according to the Lundberg Survey taken on Sept. 8.

The drop means prices are 35 cents lower than a year ago in the days following Hurricane Katrina, which disrupted of the oil industry along the Gulf coast.

"The situation has reversed itself," Lundberg said. "Rather than a shortage of gasoline hiking prices, we've had more than enough gasoline."

"Most of the impetus for the retail gas puncture has been spent," she added. "Unless crude oil prices lose several more dollars per barrel, which is not very likely, then further retail gas prices cuts will be slower from here."

OPEC oil ministers meet in Vienna on Monday and are not expected to change production levels among member countries, Lundberg said.

Drivers in Des Moines paid the least, at $2.32 per gallon; drivers in Honolulu the most, at $3.17. Los Angeles and Chicago led the Lower 48, at $2.96.

The following are prices in other U.S. cities:

    Tulsa, Okla.: $2.34

    Cleveland: $2.37

    Atlanta: $2.48

    Houston: $2.49

    Phoenix: $2.57

    Boston: $2.68

    Denver: $2.87

I feel your pain Danger, while it's less than $3.05 here ( I live just outside Chicago) it's still $2.69 for the cheap stuff. It may have a lot to do with your local gas taxes. I know, around here, Chicago has some of the highest city/local taxes of anywhere and here where I am isn't too far behind. Iowa always seems to be consistently much lower as does Indiana (certain parts) and way down in Southern Illinois than the surrounding areas. I'll just add that it's not just fuel prices.......everything is costing more these days. Everything in general is too 'effing expensive. Went to a national fast food chain for lunch the other day and got a rueben combo basket which comes with fries and a drink; $8.56 for a very basic order. Jesus that expensive for fast food.

2.66 is the national average. Sounds like you're right in line with that.

That may be and it's certainly lower than it has been, but it's still too high and just once I'd like to be in an area that is much lower avg. rather than above avg. price wise. Noel isn't that far away logistically and he's $0.33 cheaper as well as the Southern Illinois area being much cheaper.

    $2.29 outside the city...

    $2.39 downtown...

except for the gas station on my block, which is $2.99 -- go figure
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Never understood those gas stations that insist on having prices 40 cents higher (or MORE) than everyone else. And yet there are still morons that GO to them!

You're right about that.... there are always several vehicles at this station. The only sense I can make of it is that one block downtown during rush hour is like crossing the Sahara.... so people stop lest they have to wait another twenty five minutes to gas up.

Nothing wrong with not having a new car, but damm drive 2 blocks and save some of those penny rolls.. :D

There's a crappy beat up gas station here with gas prices usually 10 cents cheaper. However seeing as how I have an 11 gallon tank, I pay the extra buck to fill up in a place where I don't feel the need for a bullet proof vest.

Bobman, I think some people have gas station preferences. Some people think Mobile gas is noticeably better then anything else. I dunno, I just don't want to pay the extra $$ for the greedy mobiles around here.

I've also heard people say "well that station waters down their gas." How the **** do you put water in a gas tank? Gas is significantly lighter then water no? So wouldn't all the water sink to the bottom and you'd either get a full tank full of gas or a full tank full of water depending on where the hole in the tanks is right?

    Sounds like BS to me.

Of course its BS. Every station gets their stuff tested by teh state, it has to be within spec for octane ratings and whatnot. No one's gas is any different from anyone else's.

It pisses me off everytime someone says, ooh, look how much the gas prices dropped. Then I laugh at them and say, you do realize that the prices are still about $1.40 more per gallon then they were three years ago right. And I heard that OPEC is complaining now because gas prices have dropped $10 per barrel. You just got record profits, shut the hell up!
