Thumbs up Skinny models banned from runway

The world's first ban on overly thin models at a top-level fashion show in Madrid has caused outrage among modeling agencies and raised the prospect of restrictions at other venues.

Madrid's fashion week has turned away underweight models after protests that girls and young women were trying to copy their rail-thin looks and developing eating disorders.

Organizers say they want to project an image of beauty and health, rather than a waif-like, or heroin chic look.

But Cathy Gould, of New York's Elite modeling agency, said the fashion industry was being used as a scapegoat for illnesses like anorexia and bulimia.

"I think its outrageous, I understand they want to set this tone of healthy beautiful women, but what about discrimination against the model and what about the freedom of the designer," said Gould, Elite's North America director, adding that the move could harm careers of naturally "gazelle-like" models.

Madrid's regional government, which sponsors the show and imposed restrictions, said it did not blame designers and models for anorexia. It said the fashion industry had a responsibility to portray healthy body images.

"Fashion is a mirror and many teenagers imitate what they see on the catwalk," said regional official Concha Guerra.

The mayor of Milan, Italy, Letizia Moratti, told an Italian newspaper this week she would seek a similar ban for her city's show unless it could find a solution to "sick" looking models.
    Quality, not size

The Madrid show is using the body mass index or BMI -- based on weight and height -- to measure models. It has turned away 30 percent of women who took part in the previous event. Medics will be on hand at the September 18-22 show to check models.

"The restrictions could be quite a shock to the fashion world at the beginning, but I'm sure it's important as far as health is concerned," said Leonor Perez Pita, director of Madrid's show, also known as the Pasarela Cibeles.

A spokeswoman for the Association of Fashion Designers of Spain, which represents those at Madrid fashion week, said the group supported restrictions and its concern was the quality of collections, not the size of models.

Eating disorder activists said many Spanish model agencies and designers oppose the ban and they had doubts whether the new rules would be followed.

"If they don't go along with it the next step is to seek legislation, just like with tobacco," said Carmen Gonzalez of Spain's Association in Defense of Attention for Anorexia and Bulimia, which has campaigned for restrictions since the 1990s.

At last....I never understood the whole "walking bones" thing on fashion shows; I really hope this starts changing that and we start seeing more models that look "real".

the fashion industry doesnt like the fact that they cant use a type of model, in this case thin/heroin chic because they feel it discriminates against thin models. They have a small point, but its the fashion industry's fault for pushing that look, and seemingly only that look.

they have an unexpainable hold on determining what is and isnt the right way to look, at least to the easily impressionable sheep of this planet, of which there seems to be alot of.

if something like outlawing a type of model has to be done to counter the fashion industry's abusive use of the power they have, then so be it in my humble opinion.

I am in HTrookie's camp that I can not understand the big whoop of waif thin models. I can understand some of them being out there, fine, but that being the only look? ridiculous. give me some meat on the bones man.

Although I personally like the "thin" look, some of those models are too thin even for my taste. There's a saying, I think it goes something like this.....what does a fat girl and a scooter have in common?.....they're both fun to ride but you wouldn't want your friends to see you on one. Yep.

Besides, designers should insist on using models with a few more curves to show off their fashions. Usually, the supermodels have a little sumthin' sumthin'. Gotta be a reason for it.

Bah-humbug. I've yet to see a girl who was too thin for my tastes.

I guess I won't be tempted to watch those runway shows anymore, though. :o

Though I could become a medic and help check the models as they come in. :D

this is the type of runway model they are talking about. rail thin.. unhealthy looking.

these thin models are NOT supermodels.. supermodels usually look healthy.. and have curves. and fake boobies. :p

second pic is Nicole Richie. and this one make here look normal. but she's pretty thin

She is absolutely disgusting. For example, in the pic below, nice ribs.... not.

I don't really care if some poeple find that attractive - to eaach their own - I just don't understand why it's the only image that's dominated the modelling / fashion world for so long. The vast majority of people I talk to don't enjoy that image, so who are they catering to?

    Default No Offense, But...

I would say it is directed at/by delusional men who are always putting down their wives, daughters, girlfriends for being too fat! Mind you, they might be big as houses themselves but they don't want their women looking like that!

Practically everything that is put out in hollywood is geared to the young & thin whether its movies or tv.

And since the message is constantly reinforced in ads on tv, radio, magazines that we all must have a man in our life & this is what they expect, the poor impressionable girls growing up don't stand a chance of developing any kind of self esteem or good common sense.

I don't know when this anorexic kick to hold. If you look at the movies of the 30's & 40's the actresses & dancers were nice and healthy! Today they would be called fat.

I'm glad some people are starting to get a clue that these unreasonably & unhealthy looking models are helping to contribute to the problems of anorexia & bulemia that women are falling victim to.

I think the women and young girls in South Philly don't give a rats behind about the super thin models. . . you should see these girls even the ones that are in early teens. . . huge boobies, nice round rumps and they all have little bellies. They walk around in winter time with the same skimpy outfits they wear in the dog days of summer NOT THAT I MIND thank you very much. There is one thing however, every time I see a young one walking around like that I stop and yell to them DOES YOUR FATHER KNOW YOU ARE WALKING AROUND LIKE THAT????

I know plenty of women who have been called fat by their husbands & boyfriends. Just 2 examples...

My best friend married this guy, had 2 children by him, & when they divorced I asked her what had happened, she said they were constantly arguing & he repeatedly called her fat! This was in her early 20's & to me she didn't look like she had had 2 kids! It did a number on her self esteem, & everytime we talk she brings up how she has to buckle down with her diet.

A former co-worker threw her fiance out of the house since he used the excuse of her weight as one of the reasons as to why they hadn't gotten married yet. So it was "her fault" that he started looking for someone else before he left her!

She had the last laugh however. After she threw him out she heard through the grapevine that he was sleeping in his office.:D I guess his back door friend didn't want him either.

Just because YOU don't know any guys right now that have done it Cody, doesn't mean they don't exist!

I dont know them personally, but I think there was probably a number of reasons that were more important than them being fat and they were just using that as an excuse. Still, even if that was the reason, I'm sure those are isolated events and happen about as much as girls dumping guys for not having enough money...

If you choose to believe that they are isolated events Cody, be my guest. But I and many other women know that they are not, & young girls are half starving themselves just so that they can attract some boy.

I (painstakingly) did some research on the women mentioned in this thread. Boy, that was a task!

I failed to see any unappealing pictures. Sure, seems some of them have rather flat chests that probably come with the whole size thing, but as for how thin they are, like the two pics bobman posted....that's hawt.

Nearly one-half of women in the USA are considered obese. Being overweight is a cultural norm, unfortunately. I only use the term, "unfortunate" because there are a host of health problems associated with obesity.

On the other end of the scale are these anorexic models who, unfortunately, serve as role models for many young people.

It must be quite confusing for youth who struggle with self-identity issues. The worst part is that parents are ill equipped to help them and most don't serve as models for good health themselves.

im really glad they did this, though i dont expect it to last long, someone will hire really good lawyers and it will all be forgotten in the next month, however, i really really hope that this sticks, as i have a lot of female friends (i know, im just as suprised as you are) that want to be models, and they frigin starve themselves its disgusting, i have confronted them about it several times but they just say its how they are, but their moms all have some meat on em so taht aint true, im just so sick of girls thinking they have to be skinny to be hot. thats bull****, i like em with some meat on em.

Dude, I'm seriously worried about you. If you think that's how a women should look, you've got a lot of disappointment in your future and deservedly so.

Someone that looks like they escaped from a Nazi concentration camp or Ethiopia is FAR from appealing to the vast majority of men that I know.

You need to get out from behind the keyboard and venture out into the REAL world for a while.

I guess you wouldn't have to spend a lot of money taking the waif out to dinner, but she'd just want the money saved to be spent on jewelry, diet supplements, or going to therapy.

This photo of Pasarela Cibeles recently in the news made me want to side with the anorexia folks.
Sure some people are tall and skinny, but her arms are in serious need of some fried food.

What's funny on the second pic is that she still has cellulite on her butt...a little exercise and a lot more calories in her diet wouldn't hurt that girl. With a good diet that top girl would be hot, now she's just...skinny.

I personally believe the effort should be spent on teaching children/young people how to be their own person and not be lemmings for mass media.

But no, let's just try to ban or hide everything that we don't agree with or think could send the wrong signal to weak minded individuals.
