SR104 vs SR124 & Ported vs Sealed

Hi,

I am thinking of buying two SR subs, but I am now not sure if I should go with the 10s or 12s. I wanna be sure I have a lot of "Boom" but still very clear fast kicks. Is there any advantage of the 10s over the 12s except less space and lower price?
I guess the 12s a re a bit louder just because of volume, but how big is the difference. Are the 12s as dynamic as the 10s?

Also, I would like to know if I should go ported or sealed. 2x single sealed or ported or 1 x double ported or sealed.

If we talk about the 2x option would you recommend to make two separate boxes or is one box with separation wall just fine?

I have one sr124dvc in a sealed 1.3 cubic foot box and it has lots of "boom" and is very clear. I'd think that two SR 10's would be plenty loud. Check out the SR subwoofer series white paper it could help you out as to what volume and type of box you might want to use.

If you can afford the 12's and have the room for them in a proper box, then go for the 12's.

As for the box, sealed would be the way Id go.

1. 1 sealed box for 2 subs without separation wall.
2. 1 sealed box for 2 subs with separation wall
3. 2 sealed boxes for 1 sub each

what are the pros and cons?

Next question: In the polk subwoofer box plans section there are specifications for the different type of enclosures. However, what confuses me, are the volume of 24liters and the measurements which give you more than 24liters.... how does that come together?

So does the sub sound best with a 24liter box, or is this just the lower limit, so that it sounds the same or even better with lets say 30 or 35 liters?

Also, does it matter how the proportions are of the box or is it only a question of volume. e.g. can the box be less deep but instead a bit higher and wider to get the same volume as recommended, and still have same sound quality?

I wanna build a custom box for my car. Thats why I am asking.

How much power are you going to be running? Mechanical power handling is dependent on box volume, so plan your box accordingly. With a 24 liter box, 700 watts will put you right at the driver's linear excursion limits -- going up to 30 or 35 liters will limit your mechanical power handling to ~500 watts RMS. So if you're only running 500W, then you can safely go larger.

From an SQ standpoint, going larger could help or hinder things... it depends on your car's transfer function. Polk's recommended 24 liter box puts the Qtc alignment at just under .707, which I have found integrates nicely with most car interiors (with many different subs). If you go with a larger box, you will boost the lowest octaves even more, and run the risk of having too much low-end. Having a lot of natural boost at 20-40 hz can result in a loss of impact because the upper end of the bandwidth (60-80 hz) is attenuated in comparison.

As far as the dimensions of the Polk box go, subtract out for thickness of box materials (3/4" mdf?), bracing, driver displacement, etc. and you will get closer to 24 liters.

It doesn't matter what shape you make the box as long as you have the same amount of airspace. Just make sure it is deep enough that you have at least 1" behind the magnet (for ventilation).

If you get an amp that does 1500 @ 4-ohms, make sure you get the SR104-DVC's and wire the voice coils in a series/parallel configuration.

their universal cases (http://www.tccustomsaudio.com/products.html) look nice, but how do they sound. if they sound just as fine as old school mdf cases, then I would not have to mess with fiberglass myself :)

I would get a black double 10inch box with 2.25cu.ft. gross volume. thats a bit bigger than the recommended 2.0 cu.ft., but I think it should be fine no? It would just fit really well into my new VW Golf 5 Gti 30 (Special Edition) :)

so in gerneral, do fibreglas enclosures sound the same as mdf?
