    Default HTiB for Dad?

My Dad wants me to find him a good Home Theater in a Box, 5.1 I know this is "Tabu" around here. But he is just not interested in dropping a lot of money and this actually will fit his needs. Anybody have any suggestions??? Oh yeah, his budget is around $500-$600 (+/-)

For that money you can get a very decent HTIB. Some people will be happy with this kind of setup; I know my dad would....

Bestbuy has a Denon 5.1 system for $630; then there are lots of options in the $300-400 range from Sony, Panasonic, etc. I guess I would go and decide based on looks.

My friend bought this and I calibrated it for him last night. It sounds pretty decent actually. The sub is a bit weak though.

There are also some non-HTIB options in that price range would likely have better sound.

2 pr of Polk R15 or R150 L/R front and surrounds - can find them for around $50/pr at outpost.com or ebay.

    Polk CSi25 center - $70 at outpost.com

    Dayton Sub-100 - $125 at partsexpress.com

That would leave around $250 for a receiver.

I've seen an Onkyo 603 refurb for $220 at ecost.com.

Doing it this way is less convenient than a HTIB, but would maximize sound quality per dollar.

Something like this from Harman's e-bay store might do the trick -

If you can swing a little extra, I'd recommend the HSU ventriloquist system ($199) with a HSU STF-1 sub ($299), then look for an entry-level used receiver and DVD player. Total system would probably be around $700, but a lot better than any big box HTiB (IMO).

The system gets many positive reviews:

or my onkyo 603 that was used for only a couple months;) :D

I had the onkyo HTIB and its good for what you pay for it. If he doesn't real mind much about audio quality, this system should work just fine.

Yeah you can't beat 429 for the pb-10. Someone on this board is selling the dual ps12 for 700.00(usually 1199.00).
