Default Will more amp head room allow me to.....?

Will more amp head room allow me to use a lower level output (volume knob turned more down) from the HU, thus reducing noise and therefore attaining better SQ?

Is this a good reason to use an amp that is rated more than the speakers are?

Please advise you SQ gurus out there, thanks.

    Yes.

But you can also turn the gain up more and that will increase the input sigal to the amp and you wouldnt have to turn your volume up as much to get the same level.

Thanks McLeod, you've really been helpful in all my posts. I tried hard to buy those SR6500, by the way, but the Neither the Singapore nor Indonesian distributor for Polk carried them. (!) They could have ordered them but it would have been too expensive to ship just one set and pay import duty, etc. So I got Focal K2P instead.

I'm now going to upgrade my amp to a Steg K series and have a choice between 115rms and 165rms. Focals are rated 100rms. I'm going for the 165, to cover myself in case of any future upgrades, but if you (anybody else) think this is too much power and a mistake, please advise.

Your car will probably go at least 120 mph. Does that mean that as soon as you start it up youre doing 120 mph all the time?

Its the same way with amps. That 165 watt amp is not making 165 watts all the time. It depends on how much you have the gain cranked up and the volume control.

Just set the gains properly and make sure to use common sense with the volume control and youll be fine.

So I would get the 165 watt amp.
