    Default Pioneer HU Repair

    If anybody can help

Have a pioneer deh-p960mp head unit (the face folds down to reveal the oel dispaly and function buttons). Installed the unit about 18 months ago. Has been working great until recently.

When I hit the "open" button to flip down the face, the unit turns off and the face folds up and down repeatedly until I hit the "reset " button. With the face closed, the unit does work (radio and CD).

If anyone has any info on this hu and this particular problem, all would be appreciated.

Paid about $450.00 for this and it does sound great. I do have a 2 year warrenty which I might have to utilize.

I figured out what the problem is. There is a flat type wire, (13 leads) that connects the face plate carrying frame to the unit. The face plate is connected to the carrying frame. When in the folded (closed position) this connector is folded like a piece of paper in half. I could "wiggle" this connector during the face plate oscillations and it would stop.

Upon closer inspection, you can see the insulation has worn off at the 'bend" in the connector.

Simply, its a bad design. How often can you bend a paper thin copper conductor in half before it breaks. Everytime the face plate would open - it was another bend.

Does anyone have access to Pioneer part numbers??

    Thanks again.

One quick point, we can't answer everything within 15 minutes, so there is no need to bump something after such a short period of time. But try calling up pioneer directly. If it's under warrenty, they should fix or replace it. I do believe on their website is a list of parts though for each headunit. www.pioneerelectronics.com

Yea, I know, but the mr. fix it side of me is saying "you can do this".

Pioneer does list some parts, but not the ribbon connector.

Being mr. fix it is all fine and dandy. But why pay for it and waste the effort if they can handle all the hassle? Plus, even opening the unit yourself will void any warrenty. You've got another what, 6 months, of the warrenty left? Use it, be mr. fix it when they're not gonna pay for it.

I'm off either exit 80, or 77, depends on which way you wanna go. I have a few friends near you.

New Jersey consists of 3 roads to worry about. The Garden State Parkway, the New Jersey Turnpike, and the Atlantic City expressway. You can tell what kind of person someone is by the exit they live off of, kinda funny actually.

OK exit 117 - What does that tell you?? I also met my wife off of 117.

To update, I pulled the pioneer hu and put the original delco back in my truck (2002 Silverado, 2500HD crew cab).

I e-mailed pioneer and got a resoponse that I will be contacted. Will them call on monday. The delco actually does't sound bad with my polks.

I don't know all areas of jersey that well, but I can do a little closer to me better. Like my area, lot of rednecks. Exits 81-83, Toms River, is a lot of people who like to think they're ghetto. Also there's a noticeable difference in wealth between each of the three exits. People south of me, and in the 609 area code, are all just a little weird. And just about anyone near that can tell you that. Oh, and if you want easy girls, head to Lacey township/Forked River area.
