RM series surround sat. placement for HT

I've read that the surrounds sats. should be mounted approx. 2 feet above you head when standing. Is that about right? How far should I run the sats. to the right and left from the listening area? My set-up has my couch (listening area) right up against the rear wall. In other words, no clearance.

That's my setup too (with the RM10 five speaker package) so this answer should be interesting. After reading Polk's Home Theater Handbook I placed my back speakers straight towards the front of my room instead of aiming them at the "sweet spot". I like their sound better that way. I noticed in the book where they mention that the back ones should be 6' off the floor level. No one makes stands that high and there's no way I'm mounting them to my walls so I have them at "ear level".

Did you put any sound diffusing material on the wall behind you. I don't plan to.

Right now I have the 2 surrounds sitting on the arms of my couch aimed towards me. I'm thinking about installing them on articulating brackets so I can make adjustments up/down and left/right. Just trying to determine the best height and distance from the sweet spot and looking for recommendations here. I want to make one set of holes and that's it. More than that and the wife will have me rolling paint in the entire room.

Sound diffusing material? New to me. Not there yet.

My back right speaker is 2.5' away and my back left is 7' away from where I sit. I used to have mine facing me but not after reading Polk's HT Handbook. I still don't understand why they sound just as good if not better angled like they are now. Wife + "paint thing" ='s understood... :)

Read Polk's Home Theater Handbook (page 27). The "little lady" might have a problem with you doing that if your set up is in the living room like mine is. I could do what Polk suggests seeing as how my son wouldn't say anything but I don't think so. Not right now anyway... ;)
