Im getting ready to purchase a new iPod video 30 GB. I see that there is a 5th generation and 5.5 generation available. What are the differences?

I'm going to buy directly from Apple. They have Certified Refurbished models starting at 179.99 which have a 1 year warranty as well. The refurb models are only available in Gen 5. Not sure if I should go for it or not...

I have the Ipod video 30gb 5G and like it a lot.

From the link above it seems the 5.5g is not that big of an update/difference.

The main differences are the 60% brighter screen, longer battery life, games, and better standard earbuds. The main selling point for me was the extra storage capacity of the 80GB vs the 5th generation 60GB because my music collection was around 55GB at the time since I have all my music ripped at 320kbps or AAC lossless.

They tend to come and go from Apple's website. They were gone for a while, and they just added some more recently.

Its actually a really good deal. The Blk 30GB iPod came out to 193.99 with tax and shipping is free. Whats awesome is that it comes with a brand new 1 year apple care warranty just like a new ipod would. I placed my order last night and it was shipped this afternoon (FedEx). I should have it by the 30th.

Just got this in the mail today (FedEx Ground). Im really loving it. I had iTunes for a while now so it was basically plug in and sync. Now all I need are some videos to load up.

BTW...these units are apple certified refurb's - they look brand new - zero scrtches and are sealed in an apple certified refurbished ipod 'brown box'

I figure I'll read about all of them for awhile. I doubt anything comes close to the price/performance at $179. I did look at the zune at target this evening and was fairly impressed. It was set to FM, had a really cool looking screen with a tuning bar showing. It also had RDS (or whatever thats called) and showed the name and call sign of the station. Looked pretty serious.

Yes. There is a number of programs that will convert and compress your dvds to view on your iPod. I haven't personally used one yet, but if you just do a google search you should find plenty of info.

Well then I have a 5 not a 5.5, not a big deal to me. But not sure what is meant about the seamless music. I'm listening to mine right now Top rated all over the place in music taste, sweet mix of music I like. 10x better then a CD changer doing the same thing.

I think those are the newer ones. The only difference I believe between gen 5 and 5.5 is a search function and brighter screen. the brighter screen really has no use for me since i decrease the brightness anyways to conserve battery power. i listen to it on the subway to and from college which is a 45 minute commute each way. it lasted about 6 days without having to recharge which comes out to 9 hours and still has maybe another 1 or so left. they claim 14 hrs for the 30gb but that really depends on lots of factors ie: bitrate, cd covers, brightness, playlist or manual selection...etc

most of my music is VBR, all of them have album art displayed and i rarely use playlists.

I have the 80 gig and love it. It was a gift, but to be honest, I like the slimness of the 30 gig. It's not a huge difference, but it works better for jogging than the 80 gig model. Just an FYI, I use PQDVD to convert files for my Ipod and it works great.

Yea, I had found the refurb page for the 80 gig yesterday, but it didnt say anything about what gen it is. Ill probably call and ask today, possibly order it as well.

It depends on how you decode them...but on average each movie is around a gig. You could cut that in half, but would sacrifice some quality. I would say around 75 movies or so.

Like anything else, it depends on compression.

I know a friend of mine gets the average DVD movie compressed down to about 1.5GB with decent video quality. So if that's your average, then ~50 full-length movies would fit if that was all you had on there. YMMV.

I guess it depends on the compression you used to make to copy of a DVD? I tend to go low when compression but at 80gig 500meg a movie say 160 but at a high compression maybe 200 +


These are nothing to look at over a 7" screen so not IPOD finer points but way cool as a personnel movie theater.
