Default Best game for great sound

Well, since Justin finally caved in and gave us a video game forum, we should probably acknowledge something audio related to the games.

In your opinion, what game has the best sound effects or overall audio presentation through your Polk speakers? :)

For me, no question, its FEAR. Its an alright game, but the amount of bass in that game is unreal. Tons of ambient bass, the bass from the effect of going into slo-mo is insane, and the surround effects are top notch. Having to hear your own footsteps annoys me, but other than that, for me FEAR is as good as it gets.

    So far, GRAW2.

I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Halo 3 beta has some incredible sound. If you have a good sub walk over to the waterfall on Valhalla and hear the incredible bass. Not to mention the grenades sound fantastic!

Gears of War is also another great one with incredibly high quality sounds. Jamey Scott was here at my school last week and the work they put into that game is mind blowing!

Condemned: Criminal Origins also has really engrossing sound design which pulls you right into the game.

There are some off of the top of my head. If I think of more I will let you know.

*Edit* I just realized I used "incredible" a lot.

    I need a thesaurus. :o

Wow you read my mind, first game that came to mind is FEAR.

I thought RB6: Vegas was good too. PGR:2-3 sounded great. Great when a car is behind you and if you are properly seated in your system you should know left or right on where the car is, after a while you will be able to judge distance too.

I personally like BLACK, i love the sounds of the guns and love the soundtrack. When you get in a large firefight things get pretty intense, and rocket launchers are amazing with my buttkicker.

Ah, good call. Vegas had very good sound design. I thought it was fantastic how much detail they put into the sound. For example one little detail that they nailed was when you were holding a gun (well yeah, you hold a gun through the whole game haha) and you would make a command to your squad to hold for example and you hear the subtle metal rattle of your hand letting go of the weapon then the leather scrunch of your hand as you made the signal then the very subtle impact of the hand grabbing the gun again with some rattle. That is a really specific example but its those details that really make me appreciate what the sound team has done on a game.

Another game that has great sound is Need for Speed: Carbon. The game itself is really over the top as well as the sound design but I personally found it to be a really fun game and there is plenty of low-end goodness.

One game that I really didn't expect to have that great of sound is Rockstar's Table Tennis. All the sounds are very convincing and there is a great variance of different impacts but the strongest point would be its great sense of space in regards to reverb and recreating a highly convincing space using the surrounds. I am eagerly awaiting to see how Rockstar does in the sound department on GTA 4. I believe the RAGE engine they developed for Table Tennis and are using on the next GTA is the total package with its own graphical, physics, and sound engines.

This is my favorite FPS. The graphics on the PC are amazing. There is a lot of sound detail, and echoes are produced in the right places. You can hear the subtle sounds of somebody trying to creep up on you, which can also be a double-edged sword.

I'm throwing another one down, Company of Heroes for the PC. Not only is it phenomenal but the sound just pulls you into the game. The tanks rumbling, the planes flying overhead, the soldiers screaming for backup over the radios, just phenomenal.

Call of Duty 2 has great sound effects. I've been really unimpressed with the sound effects in Gears of War. Don't know why.

The sound effects in Gears, in my opinion, are pretty good, but nothing that you really notice or are impressed by. When I play online and no one else is home, I crank my system. The added volume helps. There are some pretty nice effects of crumling walls and creaking steel, but clearly the graphics are the superior part of this game.

+1 on COD2. I was amazed when I fired up COD2 on the 360 in the theater room. I felt totally immersed in the violence.

Another one for the list is Darkness. Fantastic sound design and great voice acting that is well mastered. The options even let you control the LFE level and crossover!

Wow. I've never seen that option before. That is incredible.
