    Default The Black Donnellys

Anyone else watching this show? I don't watch much TV, but somehow I've caught the first two episodes and the entertainment value is off the charts.

To those who aren't familiar with it, it's kind of a cross between The Boondock Saints and The Sopranos. Highly recommended.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I'm skeptical of getting into it, because it's getting pretty bad ratings, which means it most likely won't last.

I hate wasting time getting "into" a show only to have it cancelled.

Is it getting bad ratings? That's a shame...
Seems like the few shows I attempt to watch get canned.

Freaks and Geeks would be another one.

Yeah, the premiere followed Heroes, so it had a huge "lead-in" audience. There was a big drop-off from the Heroes audience, AND halfway through the show (which is supposedly an even bigger indication since it means people just aren't interested despite watching half of the show) the audience dropped off significantly again.

So.... I wouldn't hold out hope of it staying around.

Well.. catch an episode if you can. Young Irish hooligans and mob themes always seem to be a good mix. It's worth mentioning the show is ultra-violent... I really didn't think they could show a lot of what they've shown on the major networks. Like using a sledgehammer to cram a guy into an oil drum...

    Yikes.

I think I recorded the pilot on the DVR, maybe I'll give it a watch tonight.

Like I said, if you liked the Boondock Saints, you might go for this. It had me wanting to hoist a few and scrap a bit on more than one occasion:D

From what I've been hearing it's positively moronic! It will be cancelled soon.

I wouldn't go by what you've HEARD. Judge it for yourself. There are MUCH MUCH more moronic shows that have been on for several seasons, like most of the CSI spinoffs.

    !:) !

Any more moronic than Life with Jim, Two and a Half Men, or a host of other canned laughter shows consistently at the top of the ratings heap?:D

The fact of the matter is I feel this show is actually well-written, intriguing, and very original. In other words... a far cry from most of the drivel on the idiot box.

    AMEN!!!

However, that's why it'll flop. 290 million people in this country are just plain old effing idiots and can't handle anything that requires thought.

Haha so sad yet so true. Has anybody else noticed how "dumbed down" the NBC comedies are getting? Scrubs this season has turned into a slapstick, no personality sit com and My Name is Earl just went down the ****ter though it has been getting slightly better since Christmas.

Sadly, The Office, one of my favorite shows of all time, has just grown outlandish and watered down since x-mas.

I plan on watching The Black Donnellys after it is all said and done - I just don't do TV Dramas unless I can watch it back to back on my time

Not sure I agree with you about the American audience not watching shows the require thought. Lost, 24, and Heroes are all programs that don't reveal their true intention and keep the audience guessing and "water fountain" talking. Lost has several blogs, forums, and even podcasts with discussions of theories on the many mysteries of the show. All three of these shows are right at the top of their time slots.

As for the Black Donnellys, I have watched both episodes and was not overly impressed. I do not need someone constantly narrating a show because the producer thinks I am too stupid to figure out the plot. Also introducing the narrator into the plot at various stages with the actors trying to feign surprise that he appeared is rather a cheesy way of doing things. This is where this show differs from some great dramas like the Sopranos or Deadwood.
