    Default Onkyo TX-SR702 Troubleshooting

    Hi,

Ever since I upgraded to Definitive BP10B speakers, my Onkyo TX-SR702 has been acting odd. It is very warm, even with two PC cooling fans on top of the unit, and also the output levels have decreased gradually since I got the BP10B's. Right now to watch TV I have to turn the master volume up to -10db in order to hear the dialogue; before I would watch with the volume at -45db or so.

    Any ideas?

    Any other alternatives?

What ohm are the speakers? The Onkyo won't be the best(or even good) to handle 4 ohm so you will, as noted need, a separate amp. I have a separate amp for my TX-NR901 for the fronts and they ARE 8 ohm.

Generally speaking Onkyo can hanlde 8 Ohm. Fewer ohms will be a battle and endanger it's livelihood.

    the bp 10 is 4 - 8 ohm, http://www.definitivetech.com/loudsp...lar.html#bp10b
4 is to much for your onkyo to handle.

you mentioned you are on a budget, so I would not pick up the 5 channel model you are looking at. (http://www.outlawaudio.com/products/7500.html, which is great for you.)
I would pick up 2 outlaw monoblocks model 2200 http://www.outlawaudio.com/products/2200.html, just to power the fronts.
I'd use the onkyo's L/R preout for pre. it would cost half as much, and will even sound better.

... and hey the 2200s are stackable, so you can alwways add monoblocks as u go alone.

I'm a big fan of Adcom Amps when it comes to bang for the buck. Lots of us use them here. You can get an Adcom GFA-5400/545 that puts out 200w per at 4ohms for about $250 on Ebay, or an Adcom GFA-555 that puts out 325 pre at 4ohms for around $400-450 shipped. On a budget I would go that route, you will be amazed if you do. Think car audio head units that put out 50w per, and separate amps that put out 30w per. The separate amp walks all over the head unit.

    Thanks for all your responses.

I've been researching the Model 2200 monoblocks from Outlaw Audio and they seem like a good deal for $650 a pair.

That would be stretching my budget, but I would rather get something that lasts longer in the long term. Looks like a $1000 receiver just won't get the job done...

Eh, you can do a lil better than that for about 100 more bucks.

The Odyssey Audio Khartago for 750 - hand built in the US of A... solid company - solid amp.

Besides, they go with the BP10B like bread and butter.

Note I was "stretching" my budget with the Outlaws, now even further with the Odyssey, but if it's worth it, I'll see what I can come up with.

    Its an overseas Odyssey dealer.

But their site is pretty comprehensive. They just ignore the possible upgrades.

Im not going to justify anything to you.

The Odyssey is extremely musical, clean. Its built in the United States of America. Offers a hefty 20 year, transferable warranty. Its an absolute tank.

eh? I mean in terms of its characteristics, such as the type of power supply, transformer, caps, etc.

Basically I'm trying to see why I should stretch my already stretched budget to $750 when I'm already past $600.

Ive decided to stick with my Khartago.

The Stratos would be nice, but the Khartago is such a beast and I cant seem to find its overall limitations. I just now got it broke in. Sounds absolutely fantastic.

Just keep in mind that for each product you WILL find a "just 10 - 20 % more and you get something better". I mean, you obviously know more then anybody how far you can stretch your budget, and you might find that joining the arm's race might prove ill advised.

    that said , good luck.

Good advice. With the Outlaw monoblocks I was already stretching my budget quite far, and the Odyssey Audio Khartago just puts it over the edge.

I'm looking for something in the $300-$400 range, tops. But I like the fact that the Outlaws can be turned on by a DC trigger, which most amps do not have.

I'm wondering...the khartago is conservatively rated at 110wpc while the Outlaws are rated at 200wpc. Now I know this is like comparing receiver power ratings (which aren't very useful anyways) but how does the Khartago compare to other amplifiers in the 200wpc range?

    The Khartago is a powerhouse.

Its less power than my last amp, but has 60,000 UF of current per channel. My last amp was like 18,000 UF per channel.

Have not heard it strain once.

However my amp is a Stratos in a Khartago case.

its a difficult question, because as you mentioned some manufactures allow their salespeople to much artistic freedom when describing the power rating of a product. here is an interesting editorial http://www.tnt-audio.com/edcorner/october06.html

to give you a correct answer without a listening test is impossible. I only tested the outlaws, so I can tell you that they are powerful and clear. a great product for no that much money (625 for a couple).

The odyssey seems to have more capacitance - but that does not necessarily relate to power. Based on pictures I think the Outlaws have Motorola high-current transistors, which can deliver quite a lot of power, but it's a real toss-up between the Khartago and the Outlaws.

    Not sure what to choose...
