Help with Subwoofer Choice

Any recommendations for a $500-700 subwoofer to go with a pair of LS70 fronts, a CS350-LS center, and two FX500 surround speakers?

If you know of a good sub-$600 receiver that would be appreciated too.

All will be used in a home theater setup.

If I were you, I would spend more on good amplification for those fine speaks than a top end subwoofer. So one suggestion:
SVS PB10 or HSU VTF2
If your current receiver has pre-outs... just add a separate 5 channel amp with at least 150WPC of clean power, all channels driven.

I agree that a higher end receiver would be money better spent. My current receiver is an old two channel Yamaha, it's retiring to my office, it has earned the rest. I'm looking for something young and flashy now. If I spend ~$400 on the sub that could push my receiver budget up to ~$800. Any ideas for a receiver in that range?

We agree with the others that you need to get MORE power to those speakers. As far as a sub, check SVSs' sight under their B-Stock. These are pieces that have come out of the box for display, or SVS units with minor VISUAL flaws. Some good deals there. Please let us know which direction you go in...

There were only high-end and mini subs on the B-stock page, so I went with the SVS PB10–NSD. My HT room is 11'x12', hopefully that will be powerful enough to work in that space. I'm still up in the air on a receiver. A friend recommended against a 6.1 system and I don't really want to buy more speakers, so I think 5.1 is the way to go.

The outlaw would be a good choice.

If I were in your position, I'd buy a Harman Kardon 445 and an HSU VTF2 or VTF3 MK3 (MK2s are now out of stock) The VTF2 would be more than enough, but it never hurts to go a little overkill.

P.S. 6.1 is a waste. The DTS-ES formats are few and far between. Best one I've heard is Gladiator, but I personally don't feel it's worth the extra dough.

Check out audiogon for possibly a Denon, Marantz, or Harmon Kardon receiver.. You might also check out Harmon International on Ebay.. They sell refurbished units directly from the company. Comes with the same warranty as a new unit.

luckily, the LS series were 8 ohms, and not 4 like the new LSi series. get the best you can, but a reciever will drive them, you want a good reciever though

I have no experience with that outlaw reciever, but Outlaw makes good products for little dough. might want to check out the NAD DOro's selling as well. great products, little dough

The Harman Kardon AVR 445 is only $570 on amazon.com. That seems astoundingly low. On the Harman Kardon site they list for $1,299.

Indeed, and a great unit.
You could of course go lower, to say a 245 or something at the sacrifice of 15w/channel. But then most would recommend an external amplifier.

The Nad A/V receiver doro has for $500 looks like a good deal. You may want to jump on that.

I like the NAD except it doesn't have HDMI in/out. I'd like to use my receiver to organize all my components too. Is that ability overrated?

If you want HDMI, another option may be the Denon AVR-2307. Can be had for about the same price as the HK445.

I was just looking at that receiver on the Crutchfield site. It's a bit more ($800 vs $570 for the HK) but it gets great reviews.
