    Default Need Help.

While I was listening to Jazz At The Pawnshop, I discovered that the left driver in my Boston Accoustics 920 center channel is buzzing the music rather than playing it!

What does this mean & how do I fix it?

Make sure it just hasn't vibrated loose, first. If it's still tight, get a replacement driver. I doubt that they are very salty.

Cathy - Can you remove it and test it by itself (@ low volume)?

Well I did it. It is definately buzzing/cutting out. But the 2 connectors that I saw & felt seemed to be secure. Now what?

So you took out the driver (disconnected it completely from internal wiring) and connected cables from your amp to the driver & played something at low volume and you still get the buzzing?

If so contact the manufacturer for a replacement driver or start looking for a new center channel.

Uh no. I didn't completely disconnect it. I just pulled it a little way out of the cabinet & played it at low volume & it was buzzing.

Besides I can't quite figure out how they are connected. The 2 little wires look like they are soldered on. I didn't really want to tug on them to find out the hard way.

However, maybe one of the connectors was loose because it is playing better now. It still has a light buzz & not quite as clear as the right one. But I have to be on top of it to hear the buzz.

Only way to know for sure Cathy is to unsolder the contacts & try the driver by itself.

No way Halo! If that is what's required I'll toss it & buy a new center channel! My mechanical apptitude only goes so far. Which is basically limited to using a screwdriver.

Well then take the screwdriver in your right hand and the driver in your left. Next push the screwdriver through the driver very carefully . . . now there is not doubt that you need a new driver!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaa:p

It's not totally gone, the tweeter & right driver work fine. Also since I fiddled with it the left one is actually better. The buzz is still there but unless I put my ear right up to it I can't hear it.

I've sent BA an email about it, and I will wait to see what they have to say.

Thank you Halo. I appreciate the offer. But I think after looking at it on Polk, it would probably be better to get a CSI 30 or 40.

Thumbs down Boston Acoustic's Idea Of Customer Service

I sent them an email on Saturday the 31st telling them my problem.

I JUST got an email back telling me the following:

I included my email as well, please note the bolded portion.

    Comments & suggestions please.

    Hello Cathy

If the speaker is buzzing then there is a good chance that the woofer is
blown. I would need to know exactly which one of the 2 big drivers is
making the buzzing sound in order to get you the correct part. Just to
let you know the speakers come with a 5 year manufacturers warranty so
if you still have your receipt and are able to fax me a copy I would be
more then happy to send you the replacement part for you. If like to
place an order please feel free to email me all your information to do
so. If you have any more questions please feel free to email me back.

    Thank you, Luis

If not, re-explain to this guy -

"when looking at the front of the speaker while it is right side up the driver on the left is buzzing. Attached is a copy of my receipt. Please send the replacement part ASAP. Do you have a direct line for further contact?

    Thanks,

My Polk Audio RTi10 speakers had the same problem. One of the woofers was making a buzzing sound, so I just returned fromt the place I got it and got a new one.

Take it back to tweeter before the warranty runs out. I know the our local tweeter will do all the leg work for your warranty for products purchased from them.

I unscrewed it again & there was a number inside the box, hopefully that is the part number. I will fax my sales slip to him & ask for a new one as well as for explicit directions on how to unattach the old driver so that I can put in a new one.

Sorry to hear you are having speaker problems! Don't forget to share your feelings about the "Jazz at the Pawnshop" recording. I know that you said that you didn't care too much for jazz, but share what you think about the imaging, ambient noise, etc. on that recording. (Start a new thread in the Music section).

If the driver is in fact soldered, even if they send you a new driver it will still need to be soldered. Given your reluctance I think you should contact your place of purchase first as they may take care of all this for you and save you all this trouble. Who knows maybe they will just give you a new speaker if it is still a current model.
