No, the printer and the pc should both be connected to a router / hub in a local area network.

Yes you can. You need a crossover cable such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Compone...6947009&sr=8-1
There is additional confirguration you will need to do on both the printer and computer, but it is possible.
What Russ is suggesting - the router/hub is probably the easiest to do depending on the router you buy and the printer you have. Tell us more about the printer model and how you connect to the internet.
This question comes from someone who works for Bell South, no suprise to me.
Forgot about the old crossover cable. Don't most network printers look for a DHCP server to issue an IP? I never tried a printer in a peer to peer setup, without it being connected to another pc already.
Cheers,
Russ

The typical setup is to configure your printers statically and place them outside your dhcp scope (range). Avoid using a direct connection to your laptop since this is a networked printer. Instead, connect the printer to the home network so other pc's can use the printer without you having to turn the laptop on.
If you do need a direct connection, most of the newer printer have both a network and usb port. Use the USB instead unless you're wanting to avoid installing usb drivers on an older machine or operating system.
My apologies if I misunderstood what you're trying to do.
There's a IP connection on the back of the printer. I not really sure if this printer would work on the network if I really connected that way. I didn't see any IP config settings in menus, the printer is Lexmark Optra T614.

You definitely can.
I have an hp LaserJet 2430dtn printer connected to my laptop via a crossover cable. There will be no "default gateway" in this case, so I set that = to the IP on the printer and use static IP on the laptop.
I'm sure that this works because that's how I have it set up in my dorm room.
But can't you just connect your printer to the laptop via USB?

Thanks guys, I got somewhat of successful I know my crossover cable works. What appadv stated is correct "No default gateway" worked on another printer HP LaserJet 3200 series but this is further away, but may work if nothing else. The Lexmark printer I can't get it to go for the Network setup, I wonder if it doesn't have the optional input. But I has a ethernet port? It doesn't have an USB port input :(
