Years and years ago, Stereo Review or some other audio magazine (it was a long time ago) interviewed Buck Owens. In his studio or basement set-up he had a pair of 401s with a pair of nice bookshelf speakers sitting on them. When asked about that, Buck responded that his son had made a big deal about them, so he went out and bought them, and found they worked better as speaker stands.

Sorry, Dude, the 401 was the second biggest dog that Bose ever made, exceeded only by the 601. Very thin cabinets, poor drivers, rudimentary crossover, and a cement block bolted into the bottom to keep it from tipping, and add some substance to it.

I thnk the lower end Bose make a great game room/patio general purpose speaker. I was going to get a set of used 301's for my patio, but prices were too high for what they are. I owned, and liked very much the 901 Series VI, for 14 years. Setup properly with enough amp and a big room they are a great rock speaker and have a knack for making digital sound analog----probably due to the limited high freq response of about 13kHz.

Over priced--Yes. Articulate? No way--but very, very lisentable; this is why they are so popular.

I cannot think of a single reason or situation where one would be better off with Bose. In every single scenario I am thinking about in my head, I can think of a product that will out perform them at a fraction of the price.

They are popular because of the same reasons that ClearChannel radio stations are so popular.
