tweeter protection. Polk used these before poly switches. I like fuses more personally, except if a fuse blows you have to replace it. But that also helps you with volume control :-)

alot of the older polks has fuses in the back to protect the tweeter. it would suck to have to replace the tweeter every time wouldn't it? a $2 fuse is much easier on the old pocket book huh? ;)
The new SR component speakers use these bulbs in their crossovers for tweeter protection. This way, the fuse will blow before the tweeter. Works like a charm - when setting the gains, if the bulb lights up you know youre pushing it pretty hard.
