Nice job Sal! The three pairs of SDA's that I've done with Sonicaps all sounded better than original right away. I noticed the bass was tighter, a larger more pronounced sound stage right away. The highs were not as sharp, and over time the highs got very smooth almost sweet sounding (hard to describe). I never heard any screetching, except for my wife yelling "Turn that damn thing down!"

Enjoy the fruits of your labor!

Thanks Carl, I'm very Happy I did them!

Now I am planning on changing the IC cable and Jack to XLR. After that I will buy around 10 more acoustic panels and I should be good for a year or so till after the wedding.

We are planning on buying a house after the wedding and then I will concentrate on updating the HT and I may think about doing a 2 Channel system as well.

You are fanatical to the point of attraction.
I am currently refurbing a pair of 1.2TL's getting them ready for sale.
I picked up the rest of the caps that were waiting for me at the post office yesterday. I am partying this weekend so i'll 'upgrade' my x-overs next week (for the pair of 1.2TL's that i am keeping). Currently, the Mennonites are cutting 1" solid oak tops and bottoms; its ironic if they knew what they were for.

What is new though is that i have decided that i need an PSW or two.
    Something like the PSW505?
I'm looking into a couple of deals that Walter (Polk Canada Rep) mentioned to me yesterday.
Do you feel you need a PSW? I ask because you are using Carver Amps (almost true A amps)? I just donít feel the right kind of satisfying 'umph'

    herbhead,

I do not need a subwoofer at all when listening to the 1.2tl's. The bass they produce is more than enough.

I do have One Sunfire True subwoofer that I use when I watch my projector.

What are you doing to the 1.2's?, Did you check out mine @ this link? : http://www.polksrs.com/tinc?key=SE0H...0,1,10,960,888

3 things will lead to not enough bass with any larger SDA's

    1 Air leak from drivers
    2 bad drivers
3 Lack of high currant amplifaction

BTW solid wood end caps are very atractive, but more often than not the wood will split along the grain. I know it sounds ghetto, but mdf wrapped with veneer is a much better choice.
    Ben

PS I have no sub in use with my SDA's unless I am watching movies.

I know you are talking to Sal but I thought I'd chime in. I'm using Adcom 565s to power the lows and it digs so deep that it sounds and feels like I have a sub in the configuration. So my reply would be, no you don't need a sub until you've experimented with the positioning of the speaks and equipment and ran out of possibilities.

    Herb,

Every person who has come to my house and listened to the 1.2TL's has told me that they never felt bass like these speakers put out,

I have two leather chairs in the center back wall of my listening room and when I have the Polks pumping you can feel the meat the surrounds your ribs vibrate!

What kind of Amps are you using?

ok guys, i hate to sound like a pain in the butt but.... i picked up the infinity rs1b's after i sold the sda-srs's i had and, well.... there is no comparison. as nice sounding as the polks were, the infin's just clobbered them in every way. i know, cant be,right!!. well,i had alot of company the last two days and they all said the same thing, infin alot better sounding. but lets concider the two speakers. the polks, two cabnets, the infins four. infins has 12 8 inch woofers 14 emim's and 8 emit tweeters total system. alot of drivers in four cabnets. thats alot of sound spread around, and they cost twice as much. as such, should the polks sound better??. you are only supposed to get so much performance for you dollar, thats what they say. the polks do at half the price i think hold up well. this is just my take on this, everybody likes different things in a speaker, and for me the infins do a better job at disappearing and leaving just the music. i was happy to have had a pair of polks for a while and maybe someday i will again tom t

Tom, I don't understand, I thought you wanted to upgrade the crossovers. Why did you upgrade the tweeters?, just to sell them?

Did somebody just come over and offered you so much dough that you just got rid of them?

If the infinitys sound better to you than that's Great!, Congrats!!!

We're not trying to twist your arm telling you that you must like the sound of the SDA's more than the infinity's, to each his own.

There are many contributing members here that do not own Polk Speakers.

If you really want us to hear the difference then hold a little gathering over at your place and we'll pile in and take a listen. No matter what it will be a fun day.

And if the infinity's sound better than my 1.2tl's then my brain may just freeze up and burn a fuse.

The thing is I wanted these 1.2TL's even before I ever been with a women. Things like this are just burnt into the pathways of my brain that they sound better than anything else in the world. That's something you just can't change.

The only thing that matters is that you are happy in the end.

How much did you sell them for?, I wish I knew you were selling them, I need another pair ;)

sal, i was planning on keeping them until the rs1b's came up for sale. i had 2b's and liked the sound over the polks just a little bit more, but both speakers very close in overall sound quality. the 1b's are just a big step up. i know everybody has different speakers and everybody has their favorite ones. i just happen to like the infinitys better. i had $2,000 into the polks with the up-grade and thats what i sold them for. im supposed to meet the guy half wat this friday. if for some reason it dosent work out and you are interested in them,i will let you know for sure. if i only knew you were looking, i would of taken care of you first. a get together would be great with a few guys. you, goe, and maybe someone else in the area would be nice. when the summer is over i will work on that. i totally know where you are coming from with wanting something for a long time and finally getting it. ive been thinking of 1b's for 20 years now. maybe you shouldend come over, your brain will freeze up. lol tom t

I would love to hear those infinity's. I used to be a die hard fan. I had 3 pairs of them. The emits are the cleanest tweets I have heard, but are lacking when only one pair are used. Just a word of precaution. The foam surrounds on the woofers deteriorate very badly. Try to find out about how to prolong the foam surrounds. As Laz has suggested please host a listening party with Joe as the head cook! Be prepared for some biased opinions, have patience, and I am sure that they will warm up to the speakers nicely. BTW my SDA's are over seven feet tall, have 24 drivers, and weigh more than 300 pounds:p
Stick around. you don't have to own Polks to hang here.

the owners manual is more to the point about amp power, says bass side with 100-500 watts per side into 4 ohms minimun and 75-300 into 4 ohms for mid/high panel minimun. and you need it!!!

The sound is very very good. The bass is unbelievable. It is so tight, fast, and deep it blows my mind. I have not used my sub since. The mids and highs are very nice also. I have had people over to listen to them, many various projects, and mods over time. The sound stage is amazing. One guy that came over always had something constructively negative to say about all of my projects. He heard them, and just shook his head in disbelief. He could not believe that speakers of this size could just "disappear" like they do. That being said I am my hardest critic. I am never completely satisfied. I am using a car audio electronic crossover to play with XO points. I am going to go passive. The parts should be here today. With an array of dome tweeters like I have it is tough to get them tuned in properly. I have played with caps, inductors, and phase for a while. I am very close with the electronic, and passive combo that I am going to implement purely passive. I think I have my passive XO close to what I will end up with, but who knows till I try it. I am going to mount a board on the outside for the XO so I can easily change components, and phase. IMO the dome arrays sound pretty crappy up close, but when you are more than 6 feet away they sound great. I initially tried taking measurements at 3 feet, and could not believe the results were that far off. After moving the SPL meter further back I was pleased. If anyone tried to do a home brew like this I would tell them to get planers, or just copy Polk's, and use their tweeters. I have tried the RDO's, and they are nice, but the Morel's are a good step up from them. I have to add the side panels. Another 3/4" of mdf wrapped with grill cloth, and a band of some sort of veneer. This will give me a 1.5" thick outer wall for stiffness. Right now if you stand to the side of them you can hear the resonance coming through the walls of the cabs mildly. Not a concern as I was planning an exo skeleton type of design for the outers any way. Oops I am talking to much in the wrong post!
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks
    Ben
