RTi12 dimensions

The depth of the RTi12 is 21''.. does that include the power port on the back?

I am having a custom cabinet made and need to find out.

Mounting a speaker in a cabinet will have adverse effects on sound quality. It is better to have the speakers setup properly in an open environment. Also the rear firing power port will be firing into the cabinet which will cause decreased bass.

the speaker enclosure doors are open with fabirc. I have considered this and would rather have them away and out of sight from 20 little fingers. I can always move them out and make media cabinets if i need to..

If the cabinet does prove to be limiting i will just move them outside and lock the kids in the cabinets!! lol..

currently i have a 42" hitachi plasma for my living room tv.

I am in the middle of building a new house and building my very first HT.

thats going to be a sick setup you have there, somewhat similar to mine. Go ahead and go for three M2200's and amp that center channel as well. Since your in the process of building, why not go all out and go for the motorized 100 inch screen and projector. Go big while you can.

lol.. I always have "the basement"... I plan on a 3rd mono for the center.

I would not put them inside any enclosure even if the back is open. I had 20 little fingers around my RTi10's and the only time my kids even noticed the speakers was when the grilles were off. I put the grilles on and they were invisible.

Keep the grills off when in the cabinet. (keep them on when they are in sight of your young ones.) My kids still do not know there are individual speakers behind the grills of my LSi's. They never did mess with them.

If you keep the front and back of the cabinets open (with grill cloths covering them) it shouldn't mess up the sound to bad, but since you have never had the speakers in the room they are going into, you will not know the opimal placement of them. (i.e. - what if they sound best 1' wider apart or closer together and toe'd in slightly?)

Personally I would get the room setup first, find the best placement for them, then custom make a cabinet with that placement in mind.

Just a thought.

Will the sound only be hampered by the fact that the rear power port is firing into the cabinet? at 17" wide the cabinet will be able to toe in the speaker.

I will have 2.5 to 3" from rear port to cabinet.

Personally I would get the room setup first, find the best placement for them, then custom make a cabinet with that placement in mind.

its really the only place this can go.. fireplace on east front wall, windows on the north and a big ass mohagany ent cabinet on the south.. the back of the living room is open to the kitchen.

Bruss, I just purchased my setup.
I built this Entertaiment Center and I guess I didn't know enough about sound and high fidelity, I wanted to put everything within the entertaiment Center including the subwoofer.
As you can see after building such a big EntCent I am not about to dissasamble just to accomodate a few speakers so I decided to do a bunch of test.
Here is my set up:
Front RTi6 Left and Right
Center CSi5
Back Surround FXi3
Sub Velodyne DLS-3750R

The fronts and Center are inside the Ent Center. Before I made my final Install I tried the fronts and center in different locations outside the cabinet, I tried them with grills on and off, I even tried the RTI6 on their sides instead on upright(the way they supposed to go) The center chanel I tried till it towards the listening area.I tried it outside the cabinet below the TV

Keep in mind the Ent Center is 104(W)x94(H)x24(D) so my center chanel is way up on top of the TV
My final setup, the fronts are inside the cabinet without their grill, the center is a bit tilted on top of the TV.
The main point I did not hear any difference of having the speakers in or out sides or up right.
The Sub is out of the cabinet on the side.

As a listening guide I use several people with different age ranges and we all came to the conclusion no difference while setting up the speakers.

I am not saying that the people telling you speakers can not be inside a cabinet are wrong I just saying for my setup it didn't make a difference I any of us would notice.

Im going to be right under 11 ft in length.. does your gear get warm? Im thinking i may have to work on some circulation ideas inside the cabinet..

today I only have a receiver, a dvd and a TV what I do is when I use my receiver I keep the door 1/2 open so that the receiver can get some air, it is warm but not hot. I am using good clearance on the receiver just to make sure it has enough air. My receiver is a pioneer VSX-812K and the DVD and TV are new. my dvd and TV are connected via HDMI they are all 1.3a compliant. I am waiting until Pioneer has the same version so that I can upgrade my reveiver, I will probably get the elite series, the an amp and that is where I will stop. the amps I am looking at are sunfire, outlaw, rotel and parasound. they are all in the 2K range which is what I am willing to pay. will see.

Only piece to be ground level will be the svs +2.. Im anxious to see how much difference is in the finish. I know it wont be perfect but i think its going to be close..

while it looks like allot of building going on why not go with an Epson front PJ and a nice Dalite, Electric Screen that would hang down just in front of the Plasma. That would throw an awesome picture and make that 42 inch plasma seem like a 19 inch tv. Depending on width of the rack a 90 inch would look very nice in there. Nice unit though. If the SVS doent match up it may look a little off, consider gloss black as well. Being that you have ambient light coming into the room the plasma would be perfect for day time viewing, at night the 90 inch screen could come down at the flick of a button and the PJ fired up for some awesome movie enjoyment. Definitely something to consider with that kind of set up. Reason I mention it is because I see custom racks built like yours allot out here in Japan, and it looks very nice when the screen comes out the ceiling and a projector in place. Best of both worlds. The epson is a very solid 1080p PJ for around 2300 bucks, electric screen from ELite would run you about 600 bucks for a 90 incher. Worth a look.

Someday... This is a expensive hobby.. lol I still have to finish my basement and it has an ideal layout for a PJ... I plan on tackling all that light coming in as soon as we close on the house..
