    Default 360+ disc unreadable error+ PS3 exchange...

So I swapped out my 360 a few weeks ago at BB after it began to eat my discs. Picked up a copy of NCAA 08 last week, and now every third game or so, i get a disc unreadable error. Initially I thought it was the game, but after much reading online, it looks like this is the new error of choice for 360's.......

So I am strongly pondering packing that piece of **** up, going back to BB, and switching it out for a PS3. Anyone had any experience with this console/ done any comparisons or anything?

I was so pissed last night I couldn't see straight. I paid $400 for what?!?!!

Own which console, the ps3? My 360 has been doing the unreadable disk error for awhile now. It is one of the most annoying errors to have as it plays havoc with your games if you crash out before a save. I've been putting up with it 'cause I don't want to own someone else's refurb.

If you have the option, there is no better time to get the ps3 as they will start releasing their long awaited exclusive top tier games from now thru 2008. Lair comes out in just a few weeks. Then there's a whole mess for release in the fall, followed by more in the spring. And a lot of good third party games will release for both platforms.

The one game you'll miss out on for sure if you do the switch will be halo3. Probably a deal killer for many 360 owners who might have switched. But killzone 2 looks really good as an alternative and it is slated for release in feb/march 2008.

The ps3 is a much more reliable machine from all reports. Mine has been rock solid since I got it last winter. And the blu-ray player is a nice plus.

Well, I took the PS3 plunge. The folks at BB were surprisingly cool about it. they even switched out my most recent game purchases for ps3 versions, which was nice.

I was under the impression that it came with a component cable, but apparently not, so it looks like another run to BB this evening.

Hah, and to boot, I walk in to find 1 lonely wii sitting on the shelf. We can't have that now can we? Say hello to my 2 newest friends :) :

The Playstation store, has alot of great free downloads to try out (game demos for the most part). Get a great BluRay movie (300 comes out at the end of the month, should be a good Blu to get). I think the best (free) download right now is that GTHD demo, looks great and plays great!

There are a lot of cool tweaks you can do to get the most out of the ps3 in picture quality and sound quality. What kind of tv ya got there? How 'bout the receiver? Basically, the more high quality gear you throw at the thing, the more the ps3 will reward you in terms of picture and audio. At the very least, make sure you're good to go with surround sound out of at least the ps3's optical. That will give you great gameplay on things like resistance FOM. That game has a very precise surround field and I found myself depending on alien grunts, charging footsteps, and other sounds to get the jump on the bad guys a lot. The game itself is a must have, especially if you can get it on sale as it was a release game.

To do blu-rays real justice, though, you need at least an hdmi 1.1 compatible receiver. Lossless audio like trueHD and uncompressed pcm is a real treat from all reports. I'm saving up to jump on a good upgrade to my 3803 this Christmas (maybe a pre/pro?). The vanilla dolby or DTS tracks are every bit as good as dvd or better. But to really enjoy 300 in all its glory, you need the hdmi receiver...

On the video front, the latest firmware update gave the ps3 pretty much every high end option. It's got movie native 24 frame per second cadence, upscaling of older playstation games and dvds to full 1080p, deep color, and options for television (limited) or computer monitor (full) color. But again, you need the hardware to really take advantage of it. The newest (and most expensive) hdtvs will have the option of 24 fps, full 1080p, and deep color. And some hdtvs have a setting that allows for the full color (deep black levels). But most sets out there will not be able to accomodate all the features.

But even if you don't have all the hardware now, you should still have a blast on this thing when your arms give out playing the wii...

    Cheddar:

I'm running a sony xbr 910 tube, and a denon receiver. Not top end, but still very solid components. I did indeed have an optical cable left over from the 360, so that was easy. For video, I had to use component, as my tv is somewhat old at this point (no hdmi/1080p...)

So far I have been blown away! The sound is phenomenal, and the picture is as good as the 360's (although there are moments in each game when 1 system or the other shines a bit more...)

Picked up Apocalypto for my 1st blue-ray; I'm hoping to get some free time to watch it at some point this week.

Great you're enjoying the system so far. Just to let you know, I think your TV has an HDCP DVI connection. DVI is just HDMI without the ability to transfer sound. So you might have an upgrade option in the future to get an HDMI receiver. Connect the ps3 to the receiver via HDMI to get the lossless audio and the TV to the receiver via HDMI with an adaptor on the TV end of the cable.

    Adaptors are cheap:

Or you could just connect the TV directly to the ps3 via HDMI and the adaptor now since you use the optical for sound. That's the setup I'm currently using.

ya, from my htpc, I used a DVI to hdmi converter and it ran perfectly.

I read this too late to let you know, if you have a component cable from a PS2, it is identical, and works flawlessly with the PS3. Maybe it will save someone a couple $$.
