How does this player stack up to others in play back of DVD, and SACD?

I perfer the Pioneer Elite players over everything else on the market. the 79 is a very good player. It's built well, has excellent picture quality, not the very best sounding SACD player(compared to Sony ES) but DVD AUDIO is top notch and regular cd's sound better then most other dvd players I have listened to.
If you can pick one up for a good price, get it. It's a good one. Hell I still after all these years have a Pioneer Elite DV47a that I got the day it came. It's been on the chopping block for a few years now but it performs so well.

Thanks guys, I own one I brought used I don't use it much as I don't have the room to set it up right. But every time I use it (watching a movie HDMI to TV optical to AVR) I'm very impressed by the picture and sound but the picture breaks up during a movie at times. So I wondered if it was just dirty or what, or even if it was worth fixing.

From the sounds of it, its a great player.

Whats funny about Pioneer Elite is the fact they have the lowest Shop time. Compared to all other brands Pioneer Elites spend the least amount of time in our repair shops or going back to Pioneer for warranty.

Well worth getting it fixed. You could always send it to me and I'll glady fix and use it. LOL
