    Default Onkyo TX SR605 Cable sound problem

    I just got a Onkyo TX SR605 which sounds and works great with my Polk RM6750 5.1 speakers except when I use Cable HDMI connection the sound goes on and off/4-5 times and then totally off, but if I turn the TV on even just once the sound magically works again even keep working if I turn off the TV.
    Called Onkyo support and they said it's defective and to return it, but I am not sure if a replacement one will have the same problem or not, but he said this problem is rare.
    Anyone else having this problem?

    This sounds like a rare problem. Most common problem in this AVR is popping noise coming out of speakers. But I haven't heard cases where sound totally goes off. You should return this and get a new unit.

    There is a long thread at AVS Forum for this AVR, you should try your question there also.

    Are cable boxes still having issues with their output thru HDMI like they were in the beginning? I know I hear some of my custom install dealers talking about the Scientific Atlanta boxes being pretty crappy and having to use component video with coax or optical out. I just haven't heard if they got all their bugs worked out. They were having problems with audio drop out via HDMI at one point similar to what you are talking about.

    My cable box is Scientific Atlanta as well so maybe it's a problem with the cable box, but I don't have the sound dropout at all when connecting direct to my TV, but maybe it still something to do with the cable box not talking properly to receivers via HDMI like my Onkyo TX SR605.
    It's interesting that as soon as I turn on the TV it "heals" the sound drop out problem for the duration of the receiver being on and I can even turn the TV back off.

    I just discovered another problem. Many of my cable channels do not display and shows on the TV "Copy Protection" the YPrPb output is blocked. Some channels do display the picture after briefly showing the same Copy Protection error. Any idea what the problem is here and hopefully solve it? One of the main reasons to run HMDI through a stereo is to get the better sound.

    Bypass the stereo and see if the problem goes away. Sounds like there is a DHCP 'handshake' problem.

    FYI: in the Tampa/St. Pete/Clearwater area, HDMI is NOT supported by any of the local cable providers on any of their equipment.

    I bypassed the stereo and I still get the problem, so it's not a receiver issue something happenned to the cable box perhaps or signal, since it was working fine for 2 months since I have had the box and tv connected directly.
    Any idea if it's the box or the TV(hope it's not a TV problem since it's only a 2 months old)

    I called the cable company and they said there is some copyright issue between the broadcasters, cable companies and TV companies which is why HDMI does not work and they said I have to use component to get around it and someday the HDMI/copyright issue may be resolved. What a nightmare.
    Now I have to rethink how to setup my connections. Do I connect with component cables to the Onkyo TX SR605 receiver then instead? The cable company wanted me to connect direct to the TV, but I suspect that is not what I want to do to get surround sound via my receiver.

    Since I have to use component cables coming out of the cable box for picture display purposes. What is the best way to connect the cables for picture and surround sound quality?
    Can I do the following:
    cable box->component cables->receiver
    cable box->HDMI cable->receiver (for sound)
    receiver->HDMI->TV

    Based on my call with Onkyo I would do:
    cable box->component cables->receiver
    cable box->Digital (coax or optical)->receiver (for sound)
    receiver->HDMI->TV

    I am beginning to wonder if these problems appear only with the Cablevision HDMI connection and be resolved with another TV provider like Verizon FIOS. FIOS is not available yet in my area.
    I should be getting my digital coax cable in soon with component as a workaround.

    Didn't Onkyo ask you to return the defective unit based on their support line? It doesn't sound like you have and it's pointless to troubleshoot a problem if you don't follow some kind of protocol.

    Yes, they did say to return the unit since they said it's defective, so I have to work on that, but the second copy protection problem is not a receiver problem since I bypassed the receiver altogether as a test and connected from the cable box to the TV directly and the problem still occurs, so that problem happenned the other day after being able to use the TV ok for 2 months.

    I called the company I ordered my receiver from and they are backordered and will let me know via email when it's in stock to get another one. They have a 30 return policy and said if they don't email me to call them back on the 30th of this month.
