You can get impressions from the few that have their hands on them over at AVS. But to my knowledge, no player exists yet that can pass on the undecoded TrueHD or DTS-MA signal to the pre-pro for decoding. Early hdmi 1.3 players included the deep color option but not the ability to pass an undecoded signal. Confusing standard...:(

I plan on picking one up soon. Getting it for cost too, can't beat that.

Integra is the upper end side of Onkyo that isn't in any "big box" merchant. They typically have the better chipsets on the receivers, etc, and was more a geared line for the custom integrator. Plus, the complete line carries a 3 year parts/labor warranty. Onkyo won't do the separates whereas Integra will. Both lines very good.

The new receivers from Onkyo and Integra both decode the (soon to be out) Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD sound formats. I don't know if there is much software out that has it encoded or even a player that does it other than the PS3 maybe?

However, for players that can decode the formats internally, all you need is at least an hdmi 1.1 compatible pre/pro to get at the decoded audio.

If you get it online, make sure it's an authorized dealer otherwise, it's null.

From what I've heard, the integra line has a very limited custom installer type sales network. However, there is the pro version PR-SC885P that is supposed to be almost identical in capability that you might be able to find online eventually. It was supposed to be released this month. Word is that discounts are easier to get on this model too.

Local. As for the Onkyo pro version, it's supposed to be more expensive and IMO, not as nice looking.

The list is more expensive ($1800), but actual street prices are lower. I have one on order for $1300 delivered. Once it is more readily available (or available at all), it could probably be had for even less.

I chose the Onkyo because I think it looks better, and has the "Pure Audio" funtion that the Integra lacks. The Integra would be fine, if they would hide the input jacks on the front, and make the knobs black. I really hate jacks on the front of equipment, looks unfinished IMHO.

If you like the "rack handles", they can be gotten for the Integra line with no problem.

Yeah, the DTC 9.8 is hard to get ahold of but a few of my dealers have already gotten their first round in. It's been a big seller already.

You think $1100 is cost? Cost is probably closer to $800. Still a damn good price though.

Thanks, But they still say that no player,blu-ray or hd will decode the hd sound,so what would you improve by getting a integra pre-pro??

I'm guessing that some companies will be showing/releasing new HD DVD and Blu Ray units at CEDIA that will be ready for it plus there will be new discs that will be encoded with it. It will be like having to look on the back to see what aspect ratio the movie was shot in except this time, it will be to see what surround formats they are encoded with. Other companies will be releasing their receivers/pre-pros soon with those surround format capabilities, too.

Can't believe there is still so much confusion about the lossless audio formats out there. I guess since Dolby and DTS are competing against each other, they really don't care if people figure it all out as long as they buy the disks encoded with their respective formats.

    There are three lossless formats:

Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio (not DTS-HD), and LPCM.

TrueHD and DTS-MA compress the original master signal to fit in a smaller footprint on the disk. Then they must be decoded either in the player or the pre/receiver. But they uncompress 'losslessly' to the original master.

LPCM is the master audio that was never compressed. The pre/receiver needs it in this digital form anyways before it can convert it to analog and out to the amps/speakers.

Most players these days decode TrueHD although you often have to get a firmware update. No current player decodes DTS-MA. In addition, current players do not conform to the highest hdmi 1.3 standards, so no current player transmits the encoded TrueHD or DTS-MA stream so that it can be decoded by the integra. Also, the advanced authoring mode of all current hd-dvd disks makes getting at the TrueHD streams of these disks problematic for sending out to a pre/receiver anyways. So right now, until they can get this mess sorted out, it's all smoke and mirrors for decoding outside of the player.

The best current options right now are just to get TrueHD disks from hd-dvd or TrueHD and LPCM disks from blu-ray and have the player handle everything through analog outs or transferring the decoded PCM over HDMI 1.1 to a pre/receiver. DTS-MA disks from Fox are limited to decoding the core 1.5mbps stream which all blu-ray players can do via vanilla DTS.

The only thing the Integra gets you is a little future proofing for when they get the mess sorted out. The Outlaw 990 uses DVI IIRC, which can't handle audio of any form only video. You need at least HDMI 1.1 with HDCP to transmit decoded high resolution PCM digitally to the pre/receiver. However, you can still do everything through analog outs on the player to the 990 if you don't mind the extra cables.

Anybody knows any dealer that has the new integra 8.8 in stock and willing to ship? None of my local dealers stock it.
