That was a good deal. I had that exact set-up when it was new. Been there, done that, ain't going back. That pre-amp was a piece of poo. The amp was well built, but edgy sounding. Good bottom end though.

The preamp used a microprocessor switcher that was one of the early ones on the market. Didn't sound good, and very unreliable. Mine broke twice, once in the warranty period, and once just out of it. Sold the whole stack shortly thereafter, had the CD player too which was starting to flake out, and sounded no better than the $250 Kenwood I had at the time.

I used the amp with a Dynaco PAS3 tube preamp for a while. It helped a lot, but I got a deal on an h/k stack of that era, and it was better on every front. The amp and pre were about the same price, but the CDP was more expensive by a couple of hundred bucks. Funny, because the build quality on the amp wasn't near that of the Adcom, but it was a pretty good sounding piece. They don't make them like that anymore, which is too bad. Had that set-up for nearly 5 years, kept the pre-amp for longer, and still have the CDP, although one of the DAC chips is bad. That was the only problem I ever had with it. That, and the surplus chip dealer I found the DACs at wouldn't sell me 4 pieces out of the 40 they had in stock.

Then went all tube up until this past year. Now tube pre and solid state amp. I like my pre-amp, so that's the path I'm taking. Now just need to work on an amp upgrade, but that's next year's project.
