    Default Need help/advice on receiver

I am getting digital cable on Saturday. I have a first generation hdtv(2002).
I have a pretty nice sound system, but the receiver is lacking. Would you suggest buying a receiver and running all my stuff hdmi through the receiver?
The tv is old but it is fine. Any suggests on a Onyko bewteen 250-500?
I am trying not to spend a lot of cash. Oh yeah I also have a hd-dvd player.

I see you already own the Pioneer Ellite vsx49. That was a killer receiver in it's day. Why would you want to step way down in overall sound quality and go with a Onkyo product???

I suggest you look at Pioneer Elites new receivers and go with one of there new 1.3a HDMI switching receivers. The 92 is killer.

I went into Circuit city twice this week, trying to find a solution to my problem. One guy(frenchy) who was like dealing with a used car man told me that I could hmdi through a receiver. I talked to another guy at CC and he told me all I would get is compotent With your experience who was right?
I think I will just wait and buy a Pioneer. Onyko has some rough reviews.
I am glad I didnot jump on the Onyko.

We recently received our new Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSi (which replaced an Integra AVR) and we couldn't be more pleased. HDMI is a bummer, but it seems that it's the only way you can get HD sound (from your HD DVD for example), and the Pioneer Elite (and the regular Pioneer) AVRs handle HDMI requirements without breaking a sweat (we use external amps as we did with out Integra, but their is NO comparison, the Pioneer Elite sounded literally head and shoulders above the Integra and the Integra was a veeeeeery nice unit-this was our experience [and we had an Onkyo 727 before that], we realize this is very subjective your actual millage may vary). Our guess is that HDMI is going to be around for a while. Picture is every bit as good as component but when it comes to sound, they gotcha.

Frenchy was trying to tell me that amps were old school and that the onyko had plenty of power.

I respectfully disagree with Frenchy. Does the AVR you're looking at have Pre-Outs on it?

With all due respect, Frenchy doesn't know what he's talking about.

You have been around long enough to have seen all the different threads about separate amplification & the huge difference that it makes.
