What console?

I'm thinking about getting one of the new consoles. I haven't owned a console system since the N64 ;) I usually do my gaming on the computer.

But I've had an itch lately to get back into it. If you were going to buy one today, and only one, which would you get?

I'll be using it on a 51" Hitachi CRT RPTV (HD), if it makes any difference between the 3 consoles.

Owning the 360 and the PS3, I'd say the XBox 360 is the best for gaming. The Wii is cool, but just seems more fun at parties (where I usually play it) and with kids. Other than that, it can't hang with the big dogs.

The PS3 Is my choice it even comes with a built in blu-ray blayer. It is awsome better than the 360 "i use to own one" and also more games this cristmass will be comming out for the PS3 than the xbox.

Xbox 360 has the bigger catalog and the better online (though you have to pay for it). Most of the holiday games will be multi-platform, but if you go PS3 you'll be missing out on 360 exclusives like Bioshock, Ace Combat 6, Mass Effect, Halo 3, etc.

Not that the PS3 hardware isn't impressive, and having the Blu-ray player is nice... but the games just aren't there yet. Most people that I know who bought the PS3 only use it to play Blu-ray discs because of that.

The 360, no doubt about it. Its the best machine period for games. There are just so many must play, must own games for the 360. Its ridiculous how many quality titles there are for the 360.

Oh, and I recently saw what the 360 can do with Media Center. Its awesome. I'm working on fixing my computer so it can do Media Center as quickly as possible now. Its just amazing.

I must say I'm surprised at the 360 getting the most votes so far. I figured more peeps would be screaming for the PS3, since you get Blue Ray with it. Yeah, I know the 360 will do HD DVD's, but when you add in the price, it's 80 bucks more for it than the PS3 alone.

I'm still torn. I really think the wii would be great for Zelda and Metroid prime alone; but having the ability to do Blue Ray or HD DVD will probably lead me to one the other systems, since all I have is a SD DVD player at the moment.

The PS3 gets my vote. There are more then two of three games worth playing on it. this winter and next spring you will see games that the xBox360 could only dream about. I myself have been playing Lair,Warhawk and Resistance. y next game I want when the price comes down will be Sonic. But I can't wait for Metal Gear Solid 4 (MGS4). that game is going to be SWEET!

If you're not a serious gamer, the Wii should do it. PS3 is cool, but disc rivalry has not been settled yet... (Some of you might remember beta and VCR). But if I was going to buy, it would be 360.

...it depends. If you wanted to just focus on current generations I would say go for the 360 for the better current game selection and better price.

If you cared about last generation, I would say go with the PS3 w/backwards compatibility. There were a lot of phenomenal games that you missed by skipping a generation of gaming which should be played. (Ex. Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Devil May Cry...etc)

I'd say the 360 overall is a more versatile machine, but here's how I'd break things down:

1 - So far the game selection is better, but will even out over time.

2 - XBOX Live absolutely crushes the PS3 onnline play, but you have to shell out about $40 a year for it. I'm not a big online player, so that wasn't a huge selling point for me.

3 - While they both offer hi-def formats, I think the PS3 having Blu-Ray built in is an added bonus. The XBOX has HD-dvd, but it's an add on. For the price that M$ wants for the hd-dvd drive, I'd just go buy one of the Toshiba players. I would personally never use a console for dvd playback, just like I wouldn't use them for music playback in my 2 channel system. But if this were a major reason that you're buying, then I'd lean towards the PS3 in this area.

4 - I think the Media Center capabilities on the 360 are superior to that of the PS3. With the proper setup, I can stream music and movies from my PC. The same can be said for the PS3, but think the 360 does a better job.

Other differences:

1 - The PS3 comes with a built in wireless connection, the 3601 does not, it's a 100 add on.

2 - The 360 comes with an HDMI cable, the PS3 does not. I'm not sure how cheap you can get those today, but in store they're still around $80.

3 - The PS3 doesn't compare with the 360 in hard drive size, offering only 80GB to the 360s 120.

4 - The PS3 has built in web browser, the 360 does not. IMO, the browsing on the PS3 is clunky, but it IS there.

5 - The PS3 has keyboard and mouse support, the 360 does not. ironically, we plugged a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse into my 360 and couldn't get it to work - plugged it into the PS3 and it was recognized and functioned flawlessly without any setup.

6 - The PS3 has Bluetooth, the 360 is IR. While alot of people attribute this as an advantage of the PS3, I disagree. I can use my Harmony (or any other standard remote) with my 360, can't do that with the PS3. That's not a big deal for most, but can be annnoying if you're used to the Harmony and want to use the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player.

I'm sure there are other differences, but that's what I've noticed so far...

If you have a PC, get the Xbox 360. You can play your music and videos on your stereo. Also it's great for slide shows. I would recommend getting the remote control if you use it as media center a lot.

I have the HD-DVD player, but right now the movies are so expensive and all Sony Entertainment movies are only being release on blu-ray. However.... With Xbox Live you can buy or rent HD movies and download them directly to the Xbox for watching.

One other thing, I don't know if this is the HD-DVD or the Xbox's doing, but this thing is a fantastic upscaling DVD player (well it's a little noisy, but good speakers take care of that ;) My old Samsung DVD player is sitting in my yard sale pile.

Personally with the drop in price with the PS3 coming soon, and I was venturing into this market, it would be very hard to pass up the 40gb PS3. But for pure gaming pleasure (and if that is what your looking for) The 360 is very hard to pass up, plus you now get a 3 year warranty out of it. Hell in 3 years the talk of new consoles will be on everyones mind.

I think it supports wired keyboards. Not wireless. But I have yet to try it, so I cannot personally confirm it. But I get some long ass messages from people on my friends list, and there is no way that you can type that crap out via the controller.

ps3 built-in wifi wireless g on 60gb and 80gb, not sure on the 40gb. xbox needs an add-on attachment for wireless b/g. doesn't have to be the xbox branded one, though. i used a linksys wireless b gaming adapter off ebay for ten bucks shipped without a problem. but have since moved to a wireless g.

I have owned a 360, and I will only own another one if I get a killer deal or if the reliability issues are solved...I know, I know, you can just send it in. If I pay this much for something, I just want to play the damn thing. I will be purchasing a PS3 eventually, mostly because some of the games that will eventually come out for it (MGS4, GT5, etc) I could care less about the Blu-Ray player, I enjoy my Toshiba HD-DVD player, and really don't need another excuse to spend more money on movies. I still have a hard time dropping 5+ bills on a damn video game console though.....

I see the Xbox right now as an older AMD X2 processor running XP that works perfectly for everything out there right now but it’s ageing and there’s a much better processor out there right now. Theres games comming out soon that are going to be tapping it 100%. The PS3 is the Intel core 2 Duo quad core running Vista that’s still a little bleeding edge and not yet being used to its potential. Software comanies are scrambling to get their programs to thread those 4 processors. But in a few years, it will be hitting its stride and will have a much longer product life if you buy it now although for a good year, you probably wont use that extra potential over the AMD X2.

I ended up getting a 360 today. Best buy just got in the new Pro bundle, that came with Forza 2 and Marvel Alliance for $350. Can't wait to give her a rip!!!

Don't know what my first game bought will be yet. Probably will be The Orange Box, but Naruto: Rise of a Ninja comes out in a little over a week!
