    Default Earthquake !!

I was sitting here cruising the forum, replying tothe Karma "takeback",(not meaning anything negative by that comment, please do not take it that way) and my chair was swaying from side to side for about 45 seconds to maybe a minute or so, and the girls started yelling...

    EARTHQUAKE !!

5.6 on the Richter Scale...... just about 5 miles or so , outside of San Jose (about 45 minutes or so from here)

It was kinda weird, as I was just swaying in my office chair, side to side, diggin the smooth Jazz on the office rig, and WE WAS QUAKIN....

I have been saying for the last few days that it feels like earthquake weather...

guess I was right this time...

Wow! I'm at my home away from home (the Westin in Costa Mesa CA) and for all the time I spend in CA I have never experienced an earthquake. The only earthquake I have felt is the small one we had in north central IL in 2003.

Did you hear a rumble or a "train" on this one?

    Sleep in a tent.

No really, that [not] far away and no noise? Are you located in a valley? Sand as a substrate?

It's nice you are OK beardog ... I have only ever experienced very mild one's down here in L.A. I had a "kinda wavey" one that sounds like what you describe on my first night in Tokyo in 1998 though. With jet lag I had no idea what was going on. I had to grab onto the edge of the bed and hold on to keep from falling on the floor. There was another one that was just like a big "crack!" a couple of months later too. Both were kind of scarey, actually. The second one stopped the Shinkansen (bullet train) in it tracks where I could see it from my room. It stayed there for about sixty seconds or so and then started up again.

The locals told me the "wavey" one was horizontal, so a good type of quake, and that the "crack!" one was vertical, so a bad type of quake ... whatever that means.

    Stay safe beardog!

I do have a large hill in my back yard that is very steep , with 50-60 ft trees on it that worries me..

My house looks down on the valley...not too far up , but the fact that it was so quiet, and gentel kinda worries me for some reason

I have lived in this part of the state most of my life and been through many large and small shakers, but this one was unique, as they all are, but just....well weird

guess we shall see...aftershocks usually don`t take too long to hit after the initial quake...usually..!!

Ah, us crazy Californians, well us lifers anyway, and our ho-hum attitude towards earthquakes.

I'm in south San Jose and I got a bit of a jolt, then some good shakin'. Myself and my two roommates strolled over into our respective doorways and had a nice chat about this being the first earthquake we've really felt in a while, then it was over and we got back to typing internet things.

Personally, I love earthquakes - they're just such a unique and fun sensation - as long as no one gets killed, anyway. Tonight's was a perfect example of a primo fun quake :D

The fact that _this_ is pretty much the only natural disaster in the Bay Area, gives yet another reason why this is one of the best places to live.

Didn't feel it at all....and I was in San Francisco.

I am guesting as a radio host tonight and I was at the building that housed 102.9 FM (The Quiet Storm)....security guard on ground level didn't feel the earthquake while engineer on 9th floor told me of the severe wave-like motion.

Back in the late 80's, I recall going through quite a number of 6.0+'s when I lived in Long Beach and San Diego. Overall, the sensations were very ho-hum - to the point to where I allegedly slept through quite a few. Of course, there was an added sense of suspension those days - as many folks swore up and down that the "big" quake was just around the corner - one which would ultimately leave Cali drifting into the Pacific.

So far, no such luck. :)

    It wasn't an earthquake.

Russman farted on the john. His ass formed a completely airtight seal on the commode and the rumble went up stream and was felt as what one might consider an earthquake.

Yeah, I was out at our local intermediate school and our troop was out playing hide and go seek with airsofts... One of our guys was under his dad's car... Scared the crap out of him... But I heard something like a great wind, saw some cars rocking and knew what was coming... Apparently it was in Milpitas, Northeast of San Jose... And I was sleeping when the one today hit...
