Default PS3 doesn't stream from PC?

    Are you effing serious!!!?

Someone please tell me I'm wrong...

It appears that the PS3 doesn't support streams from my PC out of the box, is that right? I get the whoe MS vs Sony thing, but that's a huge drawback for me.

I don't want this to turn into a PS3 vs 360 pissing match - just am shocked that this would be omitted. I'm sure there are ways to get it to work, but still...

Sami's right. In fact, both the 360 and PS3 are picky about streaming. The only thing that saves the 360 are the third party apps like Transcoder 360 and TVersity. Currently, I don't know if such programs exists for the PS3.

Sony needs to up the format support or open it up for third party coders. The lack of FLAC support is what bothers me, and I also would like to stream video from my server on occasion. All my home DV captures are ok and that's the most important thing for me right now.

If you use the 360 as a media center extender device, its nothing short of epic.

Here are some great free apps:

    http://www.redkawa.com/

Ps3 video 9 is a great media encoder for getting your stuff into the right format. I keep all my media right on my 200GB hard drive bypassing the need for streaming. So the file server helps me to move my files between my pc and my ps3. But it should work streaming the files if you can get them in the proper format. Ps3 video 9 works for most of the conversions. For extra picky ones, I've also had success using the windows movie maker in vista to crank out a high quality wmv file. Once it's been processed through windows movie maker, it almost always comes through clean in ps3 video 9 in either an mpeg2 or AVC/mpeg4 file.

Okay, I've one step further in the right direction, but still have problems.

I've got the PS3 online and it can see the computer, and can even browse through the folder, but on every folder I try to go into it just says there are no titles, pictures, audio or video, none of them are being puleld up for me.

    Thoughts?

Ok, got it figured out. Apparently there's a setting to enable ATRAC that's not documented. I have no idea what it is, but when I enable it, all my pictures and music mysteriously appear.

ATRAC, as best as I recall, is a proprietary compressing format by Sony. At least that's what I thought it was.
