Just got back from seeing it. Rock solid movie!

One of my top Stephen King stories of all time. Frank Darabont nailed it in my opinion. I did like that ending also. I applaud Darabont for having the balls to do "that ending." Knowing the story well, i was on the edge of my seat (literally) just waiting for it. When the credits started rolling, I was like...HOLY SH**!!!

Definitely not a holly jolly feel good holiday movie.

A must buy DVD for me when it comes out.

Anyone picking this one up Tuesday? The 2 disc set has the theatrical cut of the movie on disc 1 and disc 2 has the same cut, only converted to Black & White. I saw an interview with Frank Darabont (the director) and he has a love for old B&W horror flicks of the past. He decided it would be cool to convert this one.

I personally loved this flick and will be buying it. The B&W version will be interesting to watch.

Picked up the 2 disc DVD and watched the Black & White version. The B&W version gives it a very cool look and feel. I loved it! The CGI actually benefits from B&W. It blends in much better and looks more realistic. This was shot with an $18 mil budget, so thats pretty low budget these days.

Grab the 2 disc set if you plan to buy.

Glad to see this is getting some good reviews. The previews looked very good to me but Ive been fooled by those before and when it only stayed in the theater for what seemed like a week I was even more leary. I think Ill keep an eye out and maybe pick it up next time Im out.

Very cool concept and it started out excellent but started edging downhill when the smoking hot chick got killed. Then the whole religious nut thing REALLY got stupid. I mean REALLY REALLY stupid. We're supposed to believe that 1 day stuck in a grocery store will turn 90% of the people into psychopaths. By the time they killed the soldier dude, I was so pissed off I was ready to go to the church down the street and punch the first person I saw there. Im long tired of the religious nut portrayal in movies anyway. Everytime there is something bad happening, hollywood always sees fit to make sure the only religious person around is a total moon bat! Im not religious and this still pisses me off! Then top it all off with the horrible ending. Lets see, we ran out of gas so we could either keep fighting to survive and take our chances and maybe find some shelter.....or we could just shoot ourselves. Gawdamighty! I shouldve just wiped my ass with $15. At least I wouldve enjoyed that more.

I guess you didn't read the book MacLeod.

    *************Spoliers********************

The movie was true to the book, except the end. Not busting on you directly MacLeod, but i've read many arguements over the ending.

The book ended with them driving off down the highway into the mist and that was it. If they would have done it like that, then people would be bitching that no conclusion was drawn. BOO HOO, the end sucked! Cue up the people with sequal-itus

Of course, he could have played it safe by the standard hollywood cliche' ending of "...and they lived happily ever after! THE END!"

    BORING!!!

I listened to an hour long interview with Darabont today on XM Radio. He even said that todays horror has zero imagination and they live by the standard "Live happily ever after" hollywood BS endings. Was a great interview BTW.

The religious nut was in the book, so nothing changed.

IMO, the ending was gutsy and i loved it! It's not for everyone though.

Gutsy is a great way to describe it. I was afraid it was going to be happily ever after, but man... kinda took me off guard with how it did end.

While I don't agree that there would ever be a time to end your life, and stop fighting, it was understandable in their situation.

Loved the drama aspect of The Mist. Much better than I had anticipated. Not all about monsters and gore to get you into the story.

Typical Stephen Kingish. But actually great acting and film making in this one.

I wouldn't be ashamed to have it in my collection.

No I didnt read it. Im not real big on reading books. I just dont have the attention span for it. ;)

I get getting tired of the happy ending and everything and I agree with that. It wouldve been pretty cheesey with them riding off into the sunset. But if youre going to make an unhappy ending, just make sure its not completely STUPID! I mean everybody dying as theyre trying to fight their way free wouldnt have been as bad but after them fighting thru all kinds of crap and monsters and risking their lives thruout the whole movie and then just go "oh well we ran out of gas - lets all kill ourselves now" was completely unrealistic, stupid and unimaginative.

The religious nut thing was equally ridiculous. Whether it was in the book or not the whole idea that people are that pathetic that they turn into raving, murderous lunatics mere hours after adversity sets in is not only insulting but, well, ridiculous! Any movie that makes me mad is a bad movie. I want to be entertained by a movie. I dont want one to piss me off and put me wanting to go kick somebody's ass!

IMO, making a movie with a great creative idea, and turning it into a stupid humans turn into a mindless mob and the 4 that kept their sanity killed themselves the minute the going got tough doesnt seem creative or artistic at all. Ive read a few of Kings books (most on audio book :D ) and he is damn near a genius. This one however, I believed he simply phoned in.

But as I said, you cant please everybody and Im sure there are plenty that will enjoy and get this movie. I just aint one of 'em.

The reliious nut thing wasn't overblown, IMO.

Without the comforts of the "essentials" of life that they've grown accustomed to, people would, unfortunately, quickly devolve and be willing to accept anything that offered the comforts of the "known", no matter how outlandish.

Stephen King has used similar characters in some of his other stories.
The mother in "Carrie" comes to mind.

That ending took some cajones but was very effective.
The father had promised his son that he wouldn't let the monsters get him, no matter what. And he kept his promise.

Heart-wrenching, to be sure. Especially considering what happened in the minutes that followed the father's actions.

    Brilliant, IMO.

BigBlue, just curious, did you buy the DVD? If so, which version did you watch, original color or B&W?

The B&W version was excellant and gave it a better feel. The CGI benefited from the B&W conversion.

Has anyone heard the audiobook version of this? I heard there was a binaurally recorded version, where sounds come at you from all directions and everything.
