    Default What's the point...

    of the "fart-can" muffler?

I see these things serve no real purpose other than to wake me up at 3 AM while I am sleeping...

THe majority of the time....nothing because all the people that have just weld the muffler onto the stock exhaust piping and it does nothing except make noise.

For the few that actually put a legitimate cat-back exhaust on....depending on the car you can gain anywhere from 5-30 horsepower depending how restrictive the factory one is. The noise is created because the mufflers are straight through designs with larger diameter piping.

On a positive note, a nice chrome exhaust can look pretty nice on certain cars. I know the cat-back that Stillen makes for my G35 looks awesome and it doesn't sound like a fart can, has a really low grumble to it.

The acceleration noise on g35's is awesome :D(Stillen gen 2 exhaust on 2006 g35 sedan)

Reason I only went with a y-pipe/header pipe for my Maxima. The gains are there, but it's still nice and quiet.

Nice. I want a little rumble at the higher rpms want I don't want to hear much of anything at idle.

Next summer I'll be going with the Stillen Gen 2 on my g35. The gen 2 is specifically designed for the people who like the quietness of the sedan over the coupe. Very little noise at low rpm's but really has a rumble when you open it up.

I've never heard Stillen exhaust before. That sounds really good actually. I have heard HKS, Greddy and Borla and all sound really good with Borla probably sounding the best by far. I would however LOVE to hear a full AEM/DC Sports setup. I've been wanting to for a while. I think AEM is some of the best products period made for the 4cyl/import car.

If there was to be a make a model of car to fix up nicely based on just solely installing parts that consist of AEM/DC Sports, what car do you think it would be? I know a stock 2004 WRX can gain like 100hp from an AEM CAI, DC Sports Up and Down Pipes, AEM Plug & Play EMS, AEM Tru Power Pulleys, and DC Sports Cat-Back Exhaust. That's bad ass! Based on that alone I would love to hear what a DC Sports exhaust sounds like. And also a car fixed up solely on Edelbrock would be nice too, althouh they're just partial to Honda Civic I think.

Stillen is more of a Nissan/Infiniti exclusive. The HKS exhausts in my experience(have heard them on 2 subarus and a honda) are wayyy too loud. Granted they give good performance gains and the sound is cool the overall noise is uncontrollable to say the least and on my friends old WRX he had little fireballs blow out of his once in a while that made really cool sounds.

Greddy is by far the most quiet aftermarket exhaust manufacturer. My friend had a Greddy on his supercharged Toyota Camry sedan(that's right, sleeper) and you would't have never known it was on there.

As for Borla, I agree, a very unique sound and probably the best. The quality of the borla systems is top notch but despite making quite a few systems they are pretty limited to the overall vehicle selection they offer unless it's changed in the past few years.

Performance gains for the 3 are probably in the same ballpark with the HKS probably giving a bit more since it's more of the straight through design.

As for the AEM/DC sports setup....if you are wanting to hear it on a Honda, be ready for obnoxious loud. The DC sports headers on B series motors are just incredibly loud.

I hate those things too. They are so loud and annoying. Good thing i'm into car audio, so I can just tune it out by cranking up the volume :)

Anyway, I do have a Remus axle back exhaust, it was an option for my car (G20) and it actually made my car quieter. It's a deeper sound, yet it is very quiet. I really like that it's a square tip, it goes with the boxiness of my car.

Really? I would've thought that it had the best sound out there. Do you know of a website where I can sample a sound clip of a DC Sports exhaust? It don't matter on what car.

Even if they gave you 50 horsepower I still wouldnt use one because they sound ridiculous. It kills me these heads driving around in them revving them up to the moon thinking theyre the mack daddy not realizing most people are laughing at them. Now a beefy V6 or a V8 is a different story. They have the guts to sound pretty cool, but an engine not much bigger than that on a Harley, doesnt need to be amplified.

No kidding they sound horrible, and you thought they would sound the best. :)

g35's and fx35's with modified exhausts sound the best....nothing beats that unique hollow sound they make :D

Like notied earlier, a lot of street drivers who think its cool to have a loud exhuast just have a muffler welded on their stock exhaust. Most cat-back exhausts you buy aftermarket do have a bit of power gain, however most 'power gains' are lost when throwing on 20" rims that weigh 50 pounds each! All jokes aside though, the power gains are there on a full after-market exhuast system. Especially when you have an engine with forced induction, then a larger exhuast (most common are 3") will have quite a noticeable gain. Now what some people do to keep a "Sleeper" look, is they'll leave the stock exhuast on and put an e-cutout right before the cat. Then thier car is loud and fast when they need it with a click on a button, otherwise its just the stock exhuast.

Magnaflow also has some nice sounding exhuasts

You know what the REALLY funny thing about those fart cannons is? These kids put them on things like Honda Civics with dinky little 1.6L engines. That's all fine and dandy but the Honda engines are usually so high strung that you have to spin the hell out of them to make any power.

So, to make sure they can get out of their own way, they need to build torque down low in the RPM range. To do that, Honda puts soda straw sized exhaust piping on them to increase the backpressure which helps the little engines build torque. Horsepower is cool and all but torque is what really does all the work!

Anyhow, these kids put these gigantic exhaust systems on and think they are making all this extra horsepower when, in most cases, they actually LOSE power because they lose the torque building backpressure.

But on the flip side, that's why the big American V8's and V6's can only be making 120-180 horses and the cars will run like a bat out of hell anyway because they are making 250+ pound feet of torque.

    Horsepower: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower
    Torque: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque

The major difference is that horsepower is derived, torque can be measured. Horsepower is a representation of work(force) done over time. Torque is a measurement of work(force) done over a distance. Torque is an actual force or moment while horsepower is a derivation of the moment vs. time. Horsepower comes from torque. Torque comes from a measurement. Horsepower is a representation of efficiency, in an over simplified way, that shows how much torque was applied to do the work over a time frame. This isn't like fuel efficiency or the false assumption that power per liter is a measure of efficiency. This is an efficiency in respect to physical force and the work done by that force. Physics is cool!

I used a GReddy muffler on my Scion xB and like the sound a lot. Its quiet but still lets you hear a little power. I didn't notice much change in performance other than the top end was a little hotter. Mileage went up a bit. Oh, and you can't beat the look of a 3" pipe sticking out of a car with a 100 horspower motor. You obviously need that big of a pipe with that kind of power output. :)

Reminds me exactly like my uncles c5. He runs the Corsa Indy cat-back off some insanely expensive long tubes and x pipe I can't remember the name of. Plus he has all the upper and lower end built as well. Vette Doctors in New York(i think) did all the work.

Man, all I got is a stock, side-exit exhaust. But no other aftermarket system flows better without modifications in other areas. It did come with not one but TWO, count 'em, TWO 3-inch pipes!

Yeah, loud does not equal fast. It's just loud.

Somewhat correct. 230/236 .570 114 cam, stage II 5.3 litre heads, stock bottom end, 1 3/4 headers with offroad x-pipe, and B&B PRT mufflers. It's loud in person too. :D

Absolutely not. A exhaust system should be "tuned" to the engine. Removing the mufflers on a stock C5 Corvette won't net any gains. But gains of 25+ HP could be seen with a supercharged 427ci C5 by removing the mufflers.
As for in-between, I could probably get away with something a little quieter and maybe lose 3-5 HP. Or take the mufflers off and gain another 3-5 HP.

And some mufflers actually create a bit of a vacuum on the pipe causing better flow, or so I've heard.
