    Thumbs down Burnout Paradise

    Burnout Paradise demo.

impressive graphics, but.... I'm not liking the new direction for the series. Starting races at stop lights is too confusing. It is kind of like SSX3's approach, but that made a lot more sense since it was at the top of a slope. I'd prefer announcements of where races were about to start and have a time limit to get there or some such. races suddenly starting when I hit a button at a stoplight seems too fake for me to buy into the GTA/Driver type world they made.

I agree. I loved 'revenge', but might have 2nd thoughts before purchasing this one.

I just played the demo for this at a friend's house today, and I really enjoyed playing it.

I enjoyed it somewhat... but... no crash mode? Really? If you ask me, that's throwing away the thing most people loved about Burnout!

I haven't decided whether this will be a purchase for me yet. Gonna' give it some time and try it online with some friends to see if it grabs me. It definitely didn't live up to my expectations though.

I played the demo a few days back, and while the graphics were fairly impressive, the gameplay was lacking, at least for me. I also didn't like the "start a challenge at a stoplight" mechanic. That, combined with the removal of some of the core Burnout principles will make this a rent, if that.

After playing it some more, I realized something: I like goofing off and driving around... but there's no point to it. The whole starting races at a stoplight thing sucks, and they've basically ruined the core gameplay that made me love Burnout. Glad I kept my copy of Burnout Revenge. I won't be buying Paradise.

Dammit. Gave it one more try tonight, in a game with two friends... and we had a blast! It isn't the Burnout we all loved, but... it was pretty damn fun trying to one up each other and taking each other down.

So I think I'm actually reversing my decision on this. All three of us decided we were going to be getting it. I think you have to kind of throw away all of your preconceptions about it being a Burnout game and realize that they really focused on the multiplayer experience this time. If you come at it from that angle, it's actually fun. It just... isn't Burnout. It's more like Test Drive Unlimited with better wrecking, but it's a very social game if you get a few friends in.

So, single player - bleh... multiplayer - fun as hell. Despite how schizophrenic I've been about this game, I'm buying it.

It might get better when you don't have to hunt around for a stoplight with an active challenge. I certainly respect the team for not making every burnout game a copy of the previous one.

I never played this series before. I think I tried the demo of the last game (is there an older one for the 360?).

In any event, I am going to pick this one up right now. COD4 has gotten so old. I'd love to play it more, but not until they get new maps.

Read in a review last night that the host of a multiplayer match can create his own race routes by setting start, end and checkpoints. That's replayability and then some! CAN'T WAIT!

Rawr...This game is sweeeet! Love that they got Paradise City by GNR to open up the game, too. :)

I'm renting this right now. I like it a lot. Its more of the same typical Burnout, which is a good thing. I'm not a huge fan of the stoplight system, but it doesn't ruin it for me either. I'll consider keeping it. I have yet to play multiplayer over Live. In the past, everyone on Burnout seems to know exactly the perfect lines to take for each race, and if you don't know them, and all the shortcuts, you're F'ed.

I picked it up myself and I like the final version much more than the demo. However, multi player is absurd as there are SO MANY shortcuts available in races. You have to really know the city well to do well in multi player, which is unfortunate for the uninitiated.

Getting your A license really solves this problem, IMO. But if all you do is play multi-player then I guess you'll get your ass kicked all the time. I always play single player campaigns and then move on to multi-player after. :)
