Volume adjustment on RM6880

Hello, I'm trying to setup my new speakers and receiver and had a question in reference to the volume control. I have an Onkyo SR605 and Polk RM6880 speakers. Now to start I dont have all the speakers set up just the center and front left and right along with the sub. After reading multiple posts here I went the route of wiring the speakers directly to the receiver and using the white L to the sub out on the receiver. Like I said I havent gone any further than that but something is bugging me thus far. In order to get decent sound from then speakers I have to turn the volume up on the receiver to 55+. The sub isn't as loud as I expected from the look of it but it's alright. My question is, is this normal? The volume goes to 100 so I have room to climb, and as I said Im not done calibrating, etc., but this is something that I just wanted to ask at this point.

That can happen. a number a recievers scare people because they have to go to a certain "number" on the volume. Understand that volume is relative. It will change from person to person. So dont be frightened by that. As for the Subwoofer, some people do notice that you dont get as lound of volume from it as they would like using only one input, try splitting the sub cable using a y splitter and running it into both line inputs on the back of the subwoofer, That should help you out.

Welcome to the forum. You can also wire it the 'Polk way' to get a different/ better bass response out of the sub. Just follow the wiring instructions that came with the Polks.

Thanks guys. I didn't wire it the "Polk way" after reading some of the posts here so I will try that also see if there is any difference. Once I got all the speakers set up however, 5 not 7, and ran the Audyssey program for the speakers it wouldn't detect them all. It ran through from the LF in a clockwise pattern and stopped at the right rear surround so I had to do it manually. Now I've read here about setting speakers to large and small but my receiver doesn't have such settings, everything is in hz. Is there a recommendation such as 60hz is small and say 120hz is large for example? Settings like that I don't know too much about so any help would be great here too.

Stick with the LFE input method instead of the "Polk" way. You must have something set wrong in the menu and it might be worth reading the manual cover to cover while you connect everything....not just a couple speakers.

thanks for the more correct terminology dorokusai. It does increase the signal level which in turn can be interpreted as more volume.

It's a good suggestion since the signal level can vary enough that the subwoofer doesn't "wake up" fast enough. I always use a splitter because it doesn't hurt anything.
