Not surprising since they also stopped RPTV production last month. Nothing but LCD and OLED in Sony's future (plus a few SXRD front projectors)

Its a shame, they were damn good tv's. I still have my 8 year old 36" CRT Wega that never let me down, and I cannot find any new tv that can match its picture on 480P.

Too bad. My 34" Sony super-fine-pitch HD CRT is still cranking out a beautiful picture after 2.5 years. True, inky black levels. Its bulk/weight is a PITA though, and the continued price/performance improvements in Plasmas is making them look like a really nice option. Plasma is the only TV type that matches the warm natural colors of a good CRT, IMO.

Unfortunately my main Sony 34" widescreen TV decided that the picture should tilt to the left about 15 degrees, and the extended warranty company opted to pay me the price of the TV rather than fix it. I guess the Sony picture tube supply is non-existent. This would be one of the rare moments when I am glad I spent the money on an extended warranty!

It's going to be tough, but I'll have to learn to live with a Sony 46" XBR5 LCD :D

I got 2 of the 27" FS Wegas. Heavy beasties but excellent pq and bulletproof. Kind of a shame Sony decided to discontinue such a great product.

Hmm, my 34" Sony has a tilt adjust exactly for that purpose. It can get out of whack when you change the orientation of the TV, due to its relation to the orientation of the earth's magnetic field

This is going off memory, but the extremes of that setting might be able to cover even a 15 degree tilt. The again, I suppose there are many nasty ways the CRT can get permanently shifted enough that the compensation won't work anymore.

Unfortunately big CRTs won't survive in the underground like turntables have. The manufacturing overhead costs are far too high to be supported by a small (even if enthusiastic) niche. Another highly refined technology, at the mercy of consumer demand, goes the way of the dodo :(

Mine uses up all the tilt adjustment compensation, then just keeps on tilting! It takes them about 15 min to readjust it, then about 3 to 4 mos to get out of adjustment again. My extended warranty says that if they have to fix the same problem 3 or more times then they have the option to replace the TV, or pay me the original puchase price. Since they don't make a replacement, they opted to pay me the original purchase price.

im still happy with my 28' Trinitron it was one of the last sony made. it is a buget model but i still prefer it over most lcd tvs that are under £1000(not like i could aford one but why save if ur happy with the crt). there is so much more colour depth and you can watch all the dark scenes in black, rarther with added backlight effect which some may prefer ;-).the only pluss in my room to have an lcd or plasma is that i can sit "in" the tv whilst playing on the xbox360. there is also slightly less sharpness but from more than 3ft away you cant tell nor can you see the "pixels"

I imagine other makers of CRT's will also stop making them in the near future as well. Kind of weird to think that a time would come where they would stop making CRT's. we all grew up watching the tube TV.

i guess you can't really call plasma's and LCD's boob tubes can we? :p

It was much simpler when everything was black & white, with a few shades of gray thrown in ;) Color ruined everything.

Sucks that you had these troubles, but it's awesome you got your investment back, plus whatever enjoyment the set bestowed while it worked :)

Heh, color turned out to be one of the CRT tech's greatest advantages over the newer technologies, and probably delayed their demise a little bit (though not by much). :)

Though the better plasmas, and advanced S-IPS type LCDs have gotten quite good at colors.

My Sony 36" XBR hi-def vvega is still awesome. The only thing wrong is the 4:3 ratio.

I've still got my Daewoo 19" color set. That thing has seen some travels. Bought after I got out of the service in '98, and has made the journey: from Norfolk, VA, to Manchester ,MA, to Peabody MA, to Norwood, MA, to Plainville MA, to Fall River, MA, to Columbia, SC, and finally has been retired to my bedroom. Still starts up!

That sucks. I still have my humble 27" Trinitron that I bought back in 2001 and it still looks perfect. I wish Id bought one of those 36" sets last year when they were around $600. I wouldnt even be looking at LCD's right now if I had. Damn $1500+ tv's. Ill be glad when they come down to a decent price.
