PSW300 Problem

Hi there, I have a PSW300 sub which stops and starts working? Power light works, and fuse inside seems to be ok, board looks really good overall? I here a little click when I turn on the power switch, so power seems to be ok, but still no sound? I turn it off, leave it for a while, a day, maybe a week, and then it will work again for the duration of a movie, but then next time I use it, it'sagain? If I open up box,and take board out, have a look at it,etcc and put it back in,it usually works nearly everytime? There is also a very tight seal around box, not air can get in or out??? A mate of mine reckons, it could be a dry solder joint moving with the heat build up, as it does seem to get quite hot in the circuit board plastic box area. Do they heat too much could this be a problem? Weird how it works then doesn't, then does again. Please help I'm in New Zealand so i dont even know If i can gets parts here or where to take it if it does need fixing otherwise this Sub rocks!!!! I love it so... Please help ..

Thanks for contacting us. Here's a fool proof way to test to see if the sub-woofer is the cause:
1). turn the volume all of the way down on the sub-woofer and remove all of the connecting cables/wires except the AC power cord.
2). find the right and left RCA cables that go from your DVD player to the receiver and remove them at the back of the receiver.
3). bring the DVD player over to the sub-woofer and provide AC power for the DVD player, then connect the right and left RCA cables from the DVD player to the corresponding right and left inputs on the sub-woofer.
4). begin playing any CD (not a DVD, but a CD) and turn the volume up slightly on the sub-woofer. There should be plenty of clean sounding bass with no bad noises. Let the CD play completely through and try stopping and starting the player.
Let me know the results.

thanks for excellent reply, it didnt work at first but again I unscrewed back and took board out put back together turned on didnt work turned off dvd player then turned on again (which i tried before as well) and then i got noise!!! a click then a thump then a click then a thump and so on I tried again and then it worked properly with clean clear bass to the music well, then it clicked off???. What is that click some sort off interion on off switch? I tried some more and would work and then it wouldnt and then it would all with a click involved. When u turn switch on at back always there is a second interior click noise? so also working better with out reciever too i guess or could be conicidence hard to know because everything so inconsisent.

Hello,
It is possible what you are hearing is the bass amplifier going into a protect mode. This could be caused by a shorted out voice coil in the 10" woofer. Try removing one of the wires that goes from the bass amplifier to the woofer. Do this with the sub-woofer's AC unplugged when you have the amplifier plate away from the cabinet. In other words, whenever you have the amplifier removed from the cabinet make sure you have the sub-woofer's AC power cord unplugged from the wall outlet. Don't operate the sub-woofer with the bass amplifier not in position.

It would appear that something is wrong with the bass amplifier. Perhaps one of our Forum members has a spare amplifier they could offer as a replacement?

Contacted Muppetman. Seems shipping isn't cheap to Auckland NZ. After removing the amp and weighing/measuring it. I have a shipping weight of 10lbs and a package size (absolute minimum) of 12”L X 12”W X 6”H. Cost to ship via UPS is $195! FedEx is no different.

Has anyone had experience shipping stuff internationally had have any suggestions on getting the amp over there for less cost?

Thanks Dorokusai! I checked out USPS and while they don't offer parcel post to NZ, they do have flat rate Priority up to 20lbs. That drops shipping with insurance to under $60.

Yea, I wasnt sure but that's usually the cheapest. At least they have a cheaper alternative to the other two.

I am working out the details to get my used PSW300 amp over to Muppetman in NZ. We were wondering if my amp will work on their electrical system? His amp says 115VAC 60 hertz on the back and he says he has a 240 volt fuse. We want to make sure mine won't burn up when he plugs it in over there.

Hello Doug,
I'm afraid he will need to step down the 240 Volt electrical service to 110 Volts. Your amplifier is a domestic version and functions on 110/120 Volts, while New Zealand operates with 220/240 Volts. A step down transformer is the solution.
