Ok, so my friend has a 1997 BMW 318i, and the front 'bass' drivers are blown. He pulled them out today, and now we're looking for some replacement drivers. Well, they're 130mm (5.11") drivers, so I've been looking for 5.25" drivers to replace them with.
The stock drivers are Nokia LPT 130's. Here they are in an ebay ad. They handle 40watts and, of course, are 4ohm.
Well, any 5.25" inch 4ohm (car audio) speakers I can find on CC, BB, WalMart, or Radio Shack's website are 2-ways. I'm not sure what the rest of the stock BMW system consists of, but it already has the higher ranges taken care of and we're just interested in cheaply replacing these drivers.
So, I turned to PartsExpress. Same deal with their car audio speakers. However, any reason why their 5.25" woofers wouldn't do the job just as well?
Found a great 5.25" woofer, 4ohm, 30watt power handling, for only $18.50; sweet, meets all the requirements! Now, I can understand that it might not withstand the rigors of the moisture and temperature differences seen in a car environment as well as a car speaker would, but it should still last a while, and I'm thinking why not go for it.
Here it is:
What do you think? Know of any better ideas?
