Default I am new, have questions

Hi, I am in the early stages of replacing the factory system in my 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. I plan installing 1 Polk Audio db804dvc, 4 Polk Audio db571 in the doors. I only plan on powering the sub. I figure with the head unit that I will get, not that I have chosen one, will be enough for the db571's.

My questions are. How should I wire the Sub? What size amp? What brands should I avoid? I am not looking to spend a lot.

run them down to lowest ohm your amp is capable of. as for amp, theres many out there, Sundown, Hifonics, JL Audio, Kicker, Alpine, PPI, all of those are good. Again theres many more out there, just the ones I have used that do a superb job. The polk sub is only rated 180 watts rms, so maybe you should consider a single 5 channel amp and be done. Welcome to the club, Im not the best when it comes to car audio, just some thoughts though.

Being that I worked in professional audio, yes, I know about subs. I like to hear the music, an 8" sub to give a bit of low end music tonality. Which is what I want.

For a DB 8", DVC sub, youll need an amp that makes 200 watts or so at 2 ohms mono. For an output that low you should really get a SVC sub. That way you could buy a 2 channel amp instead which will be cheaper.

wasnt trying to sound like a dick. not at all, i just dont think an 8" is worth it, 10" is a LITTLE bit more money and gives u a lot more... at least the ones i have heard, which isnt many. sorry about the misunderstanding.

Ya, like he said, i think i would go with a 10, its just a step further but it gives a lil more if you decide you want more later on down the road. I have a 10" Polk DX Series right now on a Bazooka Amp and its plenty. And it also depends on what kind of sub your going to get, in able to get suggestions about how your going to wire it. Not trying to be a dick about any of this, im just trying to give some good input on it.:o

And i think any decent size head unit should be good for your speakers your wanting. Also, personally i am a big fan of Bazooka Amps, i dont know about anyone else. One Brand i've had troubles with in the past is Power Acoustik, personally i would try to avoid any of that crap.;)

Thanks for the replies. I ended up buying 2 of the 8", I got them for $30 each. Brand new. So........ what would be the best way to wire the 2 together?

One of the reasons I went with 8" subs is that the Explorer Sport Trac has very little room for a box. Under the rear seat I am barely able to get 2 12 packs of cokes under there and behind the rear seat is not much different. :mad

If you got a pair of DVC subs then you need to get a 2 channel amp thatll make about 600 watts RMS at 4 ohms bridged mono. You wire both subs together in series to make them 8 ohms and then wire them in parallel to the amp for a 4 ohm mono load.

If theyre SVC subs then you get a Class D amp that can make about 600 watts RMS at 2 ohms mono.

That wasnt exactly what I was thinking of but it would work. If you could find an amp that makes 200-250 per channel at 2 ohms stereo that would work.

I was thinking more along the lines of this from JL Audio's website:

This would let you use a 2 channel amp and run it at a 4 ohm mono load. So look for an amp making 400-600 watts at 4 ohms mono.

You could also run a 1 ohm configuration but amps stable down to 1 ohm arent as plentiful as 2 channel amp and are more expensive.
