Default TDS True Dimensional Sound or Hughes SRS

Has anyone owned or had expierience with any of the following sound field processors?any of the TDS units or the Acoustic Research TDS202,Hughes AK100 or NuReality VIVID VHT200?If so were they effective or where they too subtle to be worth using?I would be interested in hearing your impressions.

SoundCity used to give away the Nureality units with certain purchases years ago. I got one with something I ordered there.

The result is not subtle, it made everything sound extremely fake, ruined the soundstage, and it added noise. I gave mine away in less than a week.

Thanks William,It seems the results you got were what one would expect from the cheesy DSP modes available in HT recievers.I'm looking into these specific units as I thought they would be much better than the DSP dirived mumbo jumbo.

My intent is to use it on the rear channels only in a 5.1 HT setup ( no 7.1 capabilities yet).Im locked into a pair of inwall surround speakers in the back wall and was hoping that with one of these processors I would gain abit more soundstage size and envelopment with surround effects.

There were two models available from both Hughes and NuReality. I had every one of them. I still have the more expensive Hughes AK-100 and NuReality machines. If those stores were giving something away, dollars to donuts it was the cheaper models, which were clearly labeled in the marketing literature as "not intended for VERY revealing sound systems". The more expensive machines can be fun, and can add a certain amount of presence and crosstalk cancellation, that wouldn't otherwise be available in a non-SDA sysytem. They add almost zip in the way of noise. This is all moot in a home theater/multi-channel rig.

No experience with the AR unit but I don't think it was a inter-aural crosstalk cancellation attempt. More like a Barcus Berry BBE Sonic Maximizer thing.

George, would it be remotely comparable to the Carver sonic holography?

Much more than remotely associated. I have the AK-100 in case I ever run out of C-9's. Does that answer your question? The expensive NuReality is almost an exact electronic knock-off of the AK-100, it just doesn't have the cool-man graphic sound-field display on the front. They are both much more adjustable than a C-9 also.

I'm out of here, I gotta fly in the morning.

Thanks George for the informed reply.Im kicking myself for letting an AK100 slip by me on ebay earlier today,it sold for $48.I think it would be my first choice and would do what I want ,if I can find one.I excluded the C9 from consideration because it has a rather narrow sweet spot.I want there to some benifit even if seated off center.

I use a C-9 cause there's only one seat in my He-Man Rig room. Anybody sitting off-center is on the floor, and I don't care about them. I'll talk to you more about the AK-100 when I get home from work.

Maybe,I have never seen one so I have a couple of questions. Does it have multipule inputs? If so can those inputs be changed via remote or does it just operate the effects adjustments? Also how big is the chassis of this unit?
    Thanks

let me dig it out, I think it has hook ups like an EQ would have, through the tape loop (or between your preamp and power amp), and it had a tape loop.

I found an Ebay store with some brand new old stock Spatializer HTMS 2510's.They use a process similar to the SRS units, plus it is fully remote controlable.I think I will shoot him an offer and see.

I had a Spatializer also. It had three settings. The one with the least amount of effect was the best. The others were unworldly. I don't remember it having a remote, but I bought it for my daughters when they were very small. I may never have taken the remote out of the box.
