    Default Popcorn maker owners

Anybody own a popcorn maker here? I just bought one from a gas station going out of business.

I did a few test batches and not quite happy with the results.

What type of popcorn and oil do you use?

Do you add butter or flavoring?

    What is your popcorn/oil ratio?

This is why the terrorists hate us, I know:D

Is it one of those big, square ones? Like popcorn cart sized?

Yep, just like ones that are in most bars, concession stands and convenience stores.

Got the big yellow "popcorn" banner on it

Jolly Time sells a 'All-in-one popcorn kit' with pre-measured pop corn, popping oil and butter-flavored salt in a two part sealed bag, the commercial popper instructions are:
    1 preheat 5 - 7 minutes
2 cut open pouch and pour all ingredients at once
3 when popping stops dump kettle immediately
    4 turn kettle switch off

the container/pouch does not say what the ratio of kernels to goopy oily orange stuff but it looks like 4:1 kernels to butter like stuff. It does have a web link printed on the package www.jollytime.com
yep, I dig popcorn, my latest kick is kettle corn, at a ratio of just less than 2:1 kernels to sugar, the stuff in like crack!

Does all the parts work. i.e. the agitator in the kettle. Can it draw enough power from the circuit? Using a popcorn oil is usually the best way to go as they are formulated for the high heat. Follow the package directions on any popcorn. The oil should be hot before adding the popcorn. Be careful as the kettle can give you a nasty burn. Good Luck and enjoy your popper.

The bar I used to go to would add some tabasco/hot sauce to the oil. Tasted incredible especially with a beer handy to wash it down.

    Good point;)

I tried some basic oils from the store and some Redenbacher popping oil but they all lacked the buttery flavor of "bar" corn. I am heading to my local watering hole as soon as it opens with a empty oil container to do a little shopping. "Yea, give me two Coors Lights and a quart of Jolly popping oil":D

The Jolly Time kit is the best solution if you want that buttery, greasy taste you get from bar popcorn. You can't just use common grocery store oil in those machines and get the flavor you are looking for.

Well, here's some tape footage (from Chefdave's security system) that just may answer that:

Could be you have a newer model. You need one that uses Vacuum Tubes for that true movie theater popcorn taste.
