I personally have been quite impressed with both M-Audio and KRK for studio monitors. Guitar Center typically has pretty good prices on both.

thanks a lot guys. right now i have a pair of Event tuned reference 8 and will be needing to purchase another pair of monitors. trying to decide if i shoudl stick with another pair of events or try something else
You might be able to find a pair of active Tannoy's for under $500.

Adam...do these have to be powered? I may know someone that can help you with a pair of NS10M near field monitors.
There is also the HS80M powered near field which go for around 350.00 but I doubt they're as good as the NS10's.

powered would probably be the best option since room is somewhat at a premium and would prefer not to buy and amp
