Return Monitor 70's for RTi bookshelves? Need help, please.

Hi All,

I recently bought 2 Monitor 70's, a CS2 and got the free Polk 10" sub. I received 2 RTi A1's for the rear surrounds as a gift. It all sounds really good but my issue is the size of the Monitor 70's. They're just kind of too big for my space. I'm considering returning all the Monitor speakers and the sub, keeping the RTi A1's, and getting 2 RTi A3's and a CSi A4 and then buying the entry level Hsu sub for $399. I like the way my current setup sounds and I'm wondering if people think the RTi setup would be a step up or back or what? The "new" setup would only be a a couple hundred bucks more. I have an Onkyo 705 and it is mostly going to be used for HT. Would love to hear any suggestions or opinions. Thank you!

Your plan makes sense if you're running out of room. The A3s and A1s will play nice together and the whole setup should sharpen up a bit. Just consider that you will also need stands.

Thanks Ron. The "new" RTi's will go on a console/buffet type thing that I have on either side of the 46" lcd tv. With the top middle drawer removed the center speaker fits perfectly in the empty space.

I like the sound of the Monitor 70's without the sub more than with it (in the little time I've had to play around with it) so I'm wondering if the Hsu (or something similar if anyone has any suggestions) with the RTi's will fill the highs, mids, and lows? Thanks for the input.

I think your on the right track and on your way to very nice system.

I haven't heard the monitor series speakers but I own some RTi's and love them. I am using a Onkyo 304 and and they sound sweet. Very detailed without any harshness at all.

Thanks Nikolas, I'm looking forward to getting some RTi's other than the fact that I have to box up the 70's myself since the boxes they came in were kind of trashed, but that's another story...Looking back I'm not even sure why I went with the 70's, I guess it was sort of an impulse decision what with a (seemingly) crappy sub thrown in to sweeten the deal. It seems like an RTi setup for Ht my be kind of a good way to go. Any advice or opinions on the Hsu sub or any other sub? Thanks!

I don't have much experience with subs but I can give you link to the one I plan to purchase to round out my Rti setup.

I can only go by what other members have recommended in the past. The two main ons being SVS and Velodyne. The Velodynes are a little to pricey for me. And there are two many too choose from. I believe I have heard good things about the HSU but I know nothing about them. You might want to give SVS a look. I can't wait to get mine.

I just switched from the the monitor series to the RTI series. The monitor series consisted of monitor 50s, cs2 for the center, monitor 30s for the rear. The RTI series consists of RTI a5, csi a4, and rti a4. Both sounded great. My ears are not as experienced as others on the forum but they were very similiar TO ME.I would like to hear the monitor series again now that i have my rti series and see if my opinion is still the same.It was a $500 dollar difference in series.

I think i will notice more of a difference once i get my amps hooked up. The monitor series are a lot easier to push using a receiver verses the rti series. Thats probably why i didn't notice a $500 difference in series

Thanks Leroy, that's really great to hear. I just want to make sure that I'm not making a big mistake after going to all the trouble of returning the 70's. I'm fairly certain the sound will be good either way, it's just, you know, obsessions being what they are! Sounds like you've made some good moves with the RTi's! Thanks.

Lets us know how it sound when u get an amp on it. I have monitor 50 now and thinking bout stepping up a level.
