After leaving my doctor's office today, I decided to stop in to a local hi-fi shop to see what they had to offer.
After walking around for a bit, I found their (what they called)high end room. I sat down and watched their demo DVD for a bit through some medium grade Paradigms. I was far from impressed. Then I listened to some KEF iQ9's. Other than the highs being a little veiled, they sounded pretty nice. Warm, decent bottom end, with pretty good imaging. I'm sure a more optimum setup such as a external amp and some decent cable would have done them some justice.
Lastly, I demoed some subs. A Deftech model that I told them to shut off after only a few seconds. Then the Sunfire Jr., which didn't sound bad, but left me wanting more. Lastly, they put on a Velodyne SPL-1000R, definitely the most musical sub I've heard so far. Tight and clean would be the best way to describe it. I definitely wouldn't mind using it with my Magnepans, or even with my Tannoy's for a little extra bottom end. The only problem I could see would be using it for home theater. My listening room is on a slab and is partially open to my kitchen. I'm not sure if it could fill a 16x26x8' space. They offered me a pretty good price and 0% APR and 0 payment financing for one year. I hope I'm not tempted to drop in there again next week after seeing the doctor again.
