Default Ebay: feedback changes, no more negatives

Amongst some other changes, ebay is eliminating negative feedback for buyers.

    Link

I agree to a point. The buyer should just have to pay, and feedback should be left by the seller. But, some buyers are straight out of their minds, and that fact should be able to be communicated to future sellers.

I believe it to be unfair but as long as they get their money, why would eBay start caring about me now? Oh well.

It's completely unfair for the seller, especially the seller who isn't doing this as a primary or side business.

I'll say. So customers can leave bad feedback but sellers can't? What's the point?

I'm guessing that only a non-payment can trigger a negative for a buyer. If it's not a level playing field, it's more of a charade than it is now with feedback being held hostage. They weren't meeting forecasts for some time, and this must be their solution.

I know there are some users here, so I thought I'd post it.

I'm done for the most part. Got a negative this week. Sold a pair of speakers, emailed the buyer out of the gate that I couldn't ship them until a specified date. He filed a claim with paypal, I refunded his $ immediately, he left a negative mark. I log in, I can either leave a positive, or nothing at all. How the hell is that supposed to work?

Ebay (and paypal) is all about protecting the buyer, and from a 'marketplace' standpoint, I understand - people that sell, sell, sell, but the average joe is F!cked in the current equation. Oh well, I'm averaging 350 postives for every negative - but now I'm in a frenzy to sell whats left and move on down the online auction road.

I'd welcome some competetion web-wise for eBay. If there is a website to do it, I'd list tomorrow. I checked in on amazon.com tonight, not quite the same exposure for my specific items, but seems fair nonetheless (on the surface).

    Cheers,
    Russ

    Default E-Bid.net

I know there is a site called E-bid.net. I haven't used them yet. It seems like a much smaller affair, but no listing fees unless your item sells.
It is time ebay had some competition.

Posted an item on Amazon as well. Was like farting in outer-space. . . pffft . . .nothing.
Ebay'd the same item yesterday, and have some action.
I did get pissed when listing it, because I HAD to include Paypal as a payment option because I've been fairly inactive as a seller this year. WTF? Craigslist lately is full of lowballers, and morons. . . it was better when it was a secret. Any alternative would be welcome.

    Default Ebay Feedback....

Sellers should have to leave feedback first, but they should be able to leave either positive or negative feedback.
Buyers complete their end of the deal first. They pay, and if they did so in a timely manner, then they have completed their part and should receive positive feedback, if they dragged their heels, or didn't pay, or respond to email, then they should receive negative feedback.
All to often buyers either don't leave any feedback, or don't leave negative feedback when a seller truly deserves it, because they are afraid of receiving "retaliatory negative feedback". If a seller has thousands of feedbacks, a few negatives wont' affect his score much. But a buyer with less than 50 feedbacks, gets hit hard with just one negative feedback.

I've never understood why buyers care about their feedback at all. If I place a bid, it's because I want the item, I'm not buying feedback.

I have left two very well deserved negatives for sellers, and each one earned me a retaliatory negative in return. So what? I can still buy whatever I want. The old system would work just fine if most buyers weren't so damn afraid to recieve a negative.

If you are a seller, you should have two accounts, one for buying, and one for selling.

I never understood sellers who wouldn't leave feedback until after I did (as the buyer). I bought their item, sight unseen, sent them my cash based on my assumption of the veracity of their ad. What else should be expected of the buyer? I figure I don't need their feedback that badly.

It seems like ebay could solve their problem by requiring the seller to leave feedback first, then the buyer could leave theirs. What would be the downside of that? That's the way it should go anyway.

I like this line from eBay's explination of the changes:

"In addition, when buyers received negative Feedback, they reduced their activity in the marketplace, which in-turn harmed sellers."

Harmed the sellers??? How about harmed the fine people who draw their paychecks from eBay and Paypal???

That's a valid question but on the other hand this works both ways. As a buyer I've been screwed by some deadbeat sellers when it comes to feedback. Case in point, in several hundred transactions I've left only 1 neg for an ebay powerscum that was well earned. Of course, and as expected, the douchebag retaliated while also in violation of ebay contact policies. Go figure? On the other hand, I've given positive to some sellers and never received any back. No biggie, feedback is voluntary, but the way I see it as a buyer, once an item is paid for and payment was made within the time frame set forth in the terms and conditions of the auction, then the buyers done their part. It's then up to the seller to deliver the item, as described, in the manner that was agreed upon in the listing. The question still remains, as long as ebay get's their money, why should they care?

I'm personally glad they have made this change. There have been 3 or 4 times where I would have left neg feedback for the seller (for legitimate reasons) but was afraid of a retaliatory strike against me. Most of those times, I just didn't leave any feedback. The one time I said screw it and left this jerk a negative, he promptly hit me back with a negative, so there went my long standing 100% feedback.

Same thing has happened to me. I left negative feedback for a seller because of his lack of ethics, and he left me negative feedback in return.

Bottom line -- ebay is losing sales due to retaliatory tactics from sellers, so they're fixing this problem. However, there should be a mechanism for sellers to leave negative feedback in certain circumstances.

Audiogon is much smaller, but in the past they have screened feedback before it was posted. One time I sold a center channel to a certified nut job and he left scathing feedback for me, but it was never posted. Apparently, the 'gon intervened and realized how crazy it was and didn't allow it to screw up my perfect score.

I was only ever a buyer, but I stopped bothering with eBay a couple of years ago (although I will buy occasional small items; an LP or an old catalog). It's the Wild West; more downside than upside. I still browse and look at the photos occasionally, though (and note the prices that certain things are fetching).

It appears due to these changes, my local Craigslist's postings have increased 33-50%.
