Question I am confused. Dayton, Solen and Jantzen????

Dayton, Solen and Jantzen, what is the benefit to each? What make one application better for what speaker? Why why why? Or is it just trying something different?

    Thanks,
    engtaz

It's like cooking, different spices give you different flavors and what works with one dish, might not work with another.

The Dayton's are a little less edgy than the Solen's without giving up detail. I have not used the Jantzen's myself, but I have heard they are similar to the Dayton's.

What speaker are you interested in re-capping?

Hi engtaz, I've been wondering about the same thing cuz I want to do XOs on 2 pairs of SDAs and would like them to end up with not too crispy HFs.
Do you know anything about Polk S6 models,I need something cheap and loud to use outdoors and theres a pair available closeby I think I can pick up for a low price. Thanks! see ya over on Carver forum all the time!:)

You would probably be happy with any of those three brands. It's odd that when I did mine three years ago, I also asked about Dayton (they are re-labeled Benic's BTW), and Jantzen caps, because they were less expensive, and every one told me to stay away from them. Now they get great reviews, go figure.

I hear where you are coming from, but no big surprise here Bill. The Dayton's are a house brand, and the Solen's are a name brand. A Polkie used the Solen's due to recommendations he had heard here, and didn't like them. He switched to Dayton's. Well he offered up the Solen's here for free, and I snagged them up. After a while I it just bugged me that he said the Dayton's were much better. So I had to try them. Well just like my disbelief I used to have about cables I opened my mind, and tried them out. Much to my surprise the Dayton's were better than the Solen's. Everyones taste are different. Another Polkie tried them, and he stated they were lifeless in his speakers. I like good detailed treble, and I like the Dayton's. I won't shove either cap down anyone's throat. All tastes are different, and then there is synergy...

The best way to tell is to install one brand in one x-over and another brand in the other x-over and use the balance control on your pre-amp/receiver. It's called the "mono" test and I know a single solitary person that uses this method. You can even cup your hands around the tweeter to get a better idea of which is better. :D;):p:) Sorry, I just couldn't resist a little CL35M humor.

Any of the 3 mentioned would be a good choice. I don't have a preference to whats better, but as soon as I can find a good used set of 5B xo's I'm going to rebuild them with a different brand of cap and swap them in to my current 5B's which have the Solens and see if i can tell a difference.

Had to throw a little plug to SonicCaps here....
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

Sonicaps are the best, IMO but the cost can be prohibitive for the lesser speakers (Non-SDA). No way I was going to use Sonicaps in my 5B's.......too expensive. But they are in my 1C's :)

Ah, I didn't realize there was a price bracket difference there. My bad. But Sonicaps rock...

Cost wise it goes: Sonicap, Dayton 1%, Solen, Dayton std and Jantzen. Jantzen wins the beauty prize :D

WOW, if I were to use a 4.7F cap I'd use a Mundorf then, and I'd save $20!

Of the Caps ive bought and listened to extensively, I would rate as such:

    1. Mundorf (duh)
    2. Sonicaps
    3. Clarity Cap SA (very close to Sonicap quality @ half the price)
    4. Bennic (Dayton)
    SDA SRS 2.3
