New Headphones

Today I replaced my Grado SR-80 headphones with some Sennheiser HD650 (with Cardas cable) and the new Musical Fidelity X-Can v8 amplifier. Wow! Headphones are a very economical way of acheiving hi-fi sound. I'm loving this!

I have the same setup, except my amp is a Headroom Desktop Balanced model. I love it. Never heard anything quite like it.

I've got Senn's too. Recently, I went to Stax. There's a different sound.

Thats probably what I would get. I keep hearing great things about Senn + MF amps.

I've found Grado to have better clarity but have always stuck with Sennheiser or AKG. Musical Fidelity is a nice compliment to the entire Sennheiser lineup and the new v8 is excellent.

The Musical Fidelity amp is very nice, no doubt. That said, I've been testing it against the PS Audio GCHA, and I'll be keeping the PS Audio. Cleaner, smoother, better extension each way...just better sound. I dig PS Audio.

I've got a pair of Senn 580s. I've still yet to hear them on a good headphone amp though. Soon maybe. I've had my eye open for something since my latest 2ch preamp doesn't have a headphone jack.

Definitly great bang for your buck if you can get used to it. You can have pretty stellar sound with a $1k headphone rig. Hell I'm rockin a pair of Shure E2cs and Sansa Clip and am amazed how good it sounds, total cost was $70.

I've got a pair of 650s + amp + upgraded cable but just can't get into them. They sound great but "voice in your head" sound kills it for me.

What are Stax? Are they electrostatic? Seems like they're the top dog as far as headphones go...should I check 'em out?

Stax are electostatic. About 580 volts by my ears.
There's not a lot of places to hear them. There's a Stax dealer here in Dallas.
Head-fi meets are another good place. They are different enough
you need to listen to before buying. More of a Grado presentation
than Senn. You can clearly hear every instrument. Good bass,
just not strong bass. Very fast. My first Stax set-up was a 30 year old
set of sr-40 electrets with a srd-4 tranformer box that works with
speaker out connections of standard amp. That was $86 off ebay
with everything shipped, including a 16' extension cord.
The latest set up was a lot more!
