Default how do you get rid of a raccoon?

This sounds like a bad joke.. but I was cleaning around this small shed near my house, and this big hairy ass racoon starts running around inside my shed. poked his beedy eyes at me. then hid again.

I think I may need to call a raccoon terminator guy to come git rid of this vermit.

who would have thought a raccoon was living in my shed? he's got internet and HD in there too i bet. :p

oh there's more of course.. then inside the garage I found a squirrel nest.. it was well built... them squirrels are good builders. This nest was nice and comfy too. It appears he moved out some time ago though. It was empty.

I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I've watched enough episodes of "Cops" to know that you all have a munincipal animal control division in Spokane.
Give them a call, and they'll set up a racoon trap. It's a metal cage that they'll bait with a can of catfood (racoon's love catfood). I'll bet they set it up one day, and you'll have you're self a racoon by the next.
Racoons can't resist canned cat food.

I've been there & twice, DB.

Both times I just eliminated the draw - nice, comfy bedding, a food source etc. I've also located the critter's access point & closed it. Both times, at least in my case, getting the varmint gone wasn't difficult.

Of course, when he left my pad, he found another! Maybe yours?

    Good luck!

As long as you don't have any other pets (ie cats) that can get to it ..... marshmellows soaked in good old fashioned anti-freeze. This is only if you want it dead, not just relocated. Mothballs will sometimes work to convince it to relocate.

all good ideas.. hmmmm? is it against the law to poison it? shhhhh.. you didn't hear me say that. but then i'd have to dispose of the body and the neighbors might get suspicious.

this sucker is big.. maybe 30+ pounds of beefy raccoon fur ball.

but what if he has a little raccoon family in the shed too? How do I get rid of them all.

I have heard of the mothball remedy before.. so I may try that, then seal up their access to the shed. What if.. if seal them in the shed for like a month, then see what's up? LOL

Please don't poison it; at least give animal control a call and see if they can help.

We had a lot of racoons back in Euclid OH where I used to live. Don't go in the shed!!!! Those things have been known to kill people by tearing their necks apart. Seriously. Get the racoon trap from animal control or some larger pest control company. It will still be dangerous as hell even in the cage.

I've hand fed the little f$%kers off the balcony of a condo I used to own. They are usually only violent if there are babies around in my albiet limited experience.

I'd love to have a coon here, all we have are bunnies. How about some equal time? Don't make call Sharpton.

that's true.. i can probably capture the effer with a cage, but then i'd have to pick him up in the cage.. and that scares me.. so i'll let a trained person get rabies instead of me.

You should take a walk over to his shed and check it out for him. I suppose you'll know fairly quickly whether or not babies are inside. :)

You obviously haven't met Al. No way I'm walking out 'alone' to his shed.

Don't get me wrong, I'll sip Kentucky's finest with him and listen to music, but in a public setting ONLY.

I know it sounds cruel Cindy, but animal control will usually kill it. A large majority of raccoons have rabies. They don't like to mess with them. Their cages have a vent pipe to connect to a car exhaust. Raccoons in a city are not a good thing.

Carl is right... often times they have rabies. I hear that relocating them doesn't work either. and who has the time or $ these days to do that. so unfortunately, the little critters end up in raccoon heaven. or get run over by a car.. whichever comes first.

Poison it like DKG said then put it in street and run it over....just say it got hit by a car....

or shoot it. .45 should take it out no problem as jmwest suggested...

both great ideas, get rid of that thing...it's just gonna eat piece of your shed and destroy other things.

Come to think of it, yeah, animal control will probably kill it. :(

On my second job, we used to have about 8 racoons (the regulars) that would come around our outside smoking area at night.
Some of the employees were scared crapless of them, some of us weren't.

Yeah, they can be carriers of rabies, but I figured they aren't as bad as bats, and they have pretty good manners and .... what the heck, you can't live forever.
I'd sit there, smoke in one hand, peppermint candy in the other, and they'd line up for their after dinner treat (post dumpster treat).
The biggest one we called Broken Tail because some cheesehead had pushed the compact button on the dumpster way back when and sliced half his tail off.
Broken Tail always got his mint first. He'd waddle over, sit up, and I'd hold my open hand out with a peppermint. He'd come over, look at my face, and pick up the mint with his little human hands, and waddle off.

Some of the rest I'd have to roll the peppermint to them, they were too afraid.

Well, long story short, some of the employees complained, and the bosses called out animal control to trap them.
When someone found out that they'd take the trapped ones back to their garage and dump the whole cage in 50 gallon drums of water to kill them, well.... we got assigned the job of racoon location. Took them about 10 miles away then, to a park by the river to release them.

Didn't always feed them peppermints. Most of the time I'd get rolls from the dining room. They enjoy crackers, too.

If you get that racoon in the trap, go ahead and take it someone and release it (10 miles and they don't come back; they're not Lassie). Those cages have handles on them, and you don't have to worry about getting bit unless you're a complete ma-roon.

I just moved from Spokane..... LOL.

Get a .22 rifle (not a semi-auto) buy some CB longs (you cannot hear them more than 20-30 feet away) and shoot it. Shoot it a few times. Depending where you are in Spokane, this is *may* even be legal. I could legally shoot at my house in Airway Heights, but not in Spokane Valley... May want to check first...

If you put any kind of poison out, be prepared to be sued when little Johnny's cat/dog gets mixed up in all this...

More than likely if anyone comes out there to help, it will end up dead anyway.
