Receiver HDMI inputs/output to TV

Is it even worth running your HDMI inputs through your receiver and then output to your TV?? I read some articles on high-end Yamaha receivers that would reduce the picture quality significantly when the HDMI inputs were run through the receiver and then out to the TV.

Has anyone has this same problem?

I would be interested in the responses also. I currently run my HDMI directly from the satellite's box and the DVD player directly to my Sony. The optical's from both go to the processor. For me it was any easy decision because my processor doesn't do HDMI. I am looking at processors / receivers so that will probably change soon.

My thinking is that IF you are not using the receiver for video scaling then you are basically just passing the signal through and there should be no impact (given at least reasonable quality components). If you are using the receiver for video processing then I would think the results could be either positive or negative. I would prefer to let my TV do the scaling (I think).

For me the advantage would be picking up more HDMI connections (my TV has 2), and for simplifying the switching which is done with remote control macros that occasionally create mismatches. Also one less 15 foot HDMI cable across the floor.

I think it's a good question and would like to hear how others are wired.

I believe that's true for the new audio formats so that is a consideration especially when I pickup a Blue Ray. For now, DTS, Dolby Digital, and the more common formats are output through the optical connections on the Sat box & DVD plus through HDMI.

I run HDMI through my onkyo 805 and I suffer no loss in picture quality. It also makes it a lot easier having only one cable going into my tv.

If you are using the receiver for up scaling, you will not suffer loss of quality BUT your receiver may not upscale as well as your DVD player or TV. So, in a sense, you could suffer a slight loss in up scaled quality.
