Anyone here into 45rpm vinyl?

Just curious, anyone here collect/listen to 45rpm vinyl? I stumbled across about 1500-2000 of them today, but my TT doesn't play 45's however I can buy the add on to make it play them......worth it?

What's the quality like between these and 33's?

this is just my opinion.. and may be way off. I never really collected 45's in the day.. as much as I did 33 1/3 albums.

my opinion is that a lot of people didn't care for their 45's as well as they did their albums. Albums came with a paper or plastic sleeve and sturdy cardboard album cover with artwork on it.... whereby 45's usually only came in paper sleeves. Your 45's may be in better shape though too.

I currently don't have any 45's at all.

most of these are beautiful, obviously some are not so good, but the kids need frisbees so they will all get use.

45's are pretty cool. I picked up an old Audiotronics record player they used to use in schools. On something like that they are awesome. On your standard stereo system they are just so-so. You need to match the quality with the system. I actually use the Audiotronics player output into my stereo system and that sounds great! Something about the old style cartridges and preamp they used makes all the difference in enjoyment.

I used to own many 45's years ago...I don't know what happened to them. I do have on 45 rpm the complete collection of the Elvis "picture discs" brand new and never used in their original wrappers.

I have a bunch of the littleuns, but rarely play them anymore. Just too much work IMO.

I just picked up my first 12" 45 today at a yard sale. It's Soft Cell's "Tainted Love/Where did are love go". Man, this thing sounds pretty good. Kinda reminds me of the reel-to-reel decks. The faster they go, the better the sound quality.

My turntable needs the 45 rpm adapter too, and since I don't have any 45s, I don't bother. Plus I'm a noob at all of this, and being 23, I don't have any 45s "from when I was young." LOL.

I'm actually dedicating a room in the new house to 45 recordings, the victrolla and other old school recordings in the new house. At least I think I am. The only problem is I really would like to have the victrolla in the sitting room. I'm still all over the place in which room is deditcated to what.

I have a many Reference Recordings which were typically pressed 45 RPM. "Cantate Domino" & "Church Music" are two that come to mind.

Many newly released/reissued LPs are coming out in 45 rpm. What would normally be 1 33 1/3 rpm LP are now 2 LPs @ 45 rpm.

There are 2 VERY different type of 45's:

7" singles (and some 12" singles)
12" Audiophile pressings.

The 12" ones are just about the best pressings you can get. Kinda like reel-to-reel w/ a higher IPS, they can offer some improvement over 33 & 1/3... although I suspect that some of this is offset by the different stresses put on the turntable running at higher speed. Just out of curiosity, anyone ever see an audiophile turntable designed from the ground up for 45 rpm?

The singles tend to be terrible pressings. Every now and then you'll find a good one, but very little effort was put into materials or QC on them. Don't buy them for signal quality.

That said, the singles are a load of fun for just throwing on some random music- I picked up a lot of like 2500 for maybe $50. Some pristine, some scratched all to hell, most with a click or pop here & there. Close your eyes, grab a dozen, never know what you'll get.

I have that one and, 1,000's of others, some promo's, some comm. release's, the sound quality goes into the "show off your system" zone as these were mostly limited runs, high quality masters for thumpin' clubs with killer sound systems.

12" 45's all sound great to my ears, I can't say for sure if it's because of the above or the speed.

I think people know I have a Onkyo cassette deck... but it didn't have much affect. ;)

I've heard that the recent Blue Note 45 reissues sound quite good. I wouldn't mind picking up a copy of Dexter Gordon's "GO".
