PSW303 or PSW10?

I need to get my parents a subwoofer for their home theater. I'm basically trying to spend about $200 on each speaker set ($200 for the center, $200 for the fronts, $200 for the rears, and $200 for the sub), and I'm looking at getting used speakers to get the best bang for the buck. I've come across a couple of subwoofers that I think might do the trick and be in the right price range - the PSW303 and the PSW10. I'm wondering which you guys think would be best for a 12' x 15' room that is open on two sides to other rooms. They will mainly watch movies and TV.

Or do I really need to convince them to shell out the extra $ for a PSW505 or something like that?

I had a PSW10 for about a week. It was OK and really shone with some material, but placement was touchy and it tended to fall apart and get sloppy with demanding material.

The 303 is a beast in compact clothing. It's athletic and musical. At the same price it's an easy decision for me.

Do you really think a 303 is good enough for a medium sized room like the one at my parents' house, or will it be too small? The 8" woofer bothers me...

I will say that I'm a satisfied PSW303 owner - which might be a very exclusive minority! :p

My layout seems to have some positive characteristics that make the PSW303 work for me. And I do like the volume to go up to fill a room.

I'd also consider the listening habits of your parents - unless they are metal heads or are trying to recapture lost youth and want to recreate a Who concert at 120db, the PSW303 might work given your budget ;)

What other speakers are you planning to use - that might also be a factor to consider when matching a sub.

Well, they are basically leaving it all up to me. I'm planning on purchasing a bunch of the monitor line speakers (unless I find a killer deal on some Rtis). But I was basically thinking Monitor 50s or 40s for the fronts, CS1 or CS2 (if I can find a good deal) for the center, and then either 30s or 40s for rears. Would the 303 be a good match for that setup?

Mine is in a 13 X 16 room with an archway into a hallway. I'm a very happy 303 owner.

As for the center...don't skimp...mom and dad like to hear and this is where you need to invest...I'd say find a used Csi5 (GOOD FREAKIN LUCK) or find a better deal on a CSI A6. Tweeter, if they are near you may be able to get you a csi3 or 5 for real cheap

So in all you should be able to get away with about 550.00 in speakers...I'll tell ya the maple 50;s will make your mom fall in love.

The 303 is a much better sub than the VX10.

Don't settle for the Psw10 even if it is thrown in free. It is the bottom of the barrel- don't waste your time.
