    Default Computer(laptop) question

Hey guys and gals I have a Apple question.Right now I have a HP laptop and want to get a new laptop. Can some one tell me why its better to get an Apple over a PC? My choice is the 13.3" MacBook 2.5GHz with 4GB DDR2 memory and 250 GB hard drive...Any thoughts on this unit? My brother who has a Mac and others have told me that I don't need any virus or spyware protection...Is this true? Thanks

Our daughter got a MacBook for college, zero problems and they teach you how to use it if you ask them. I make money working on WindoZe for business customers, I use Linux at home (no money in that).

There are some viruses for Apple/Mac, but I haven't heard of anybody catching them...

    If I got a laptop for personal use, it'd be a Apple/Mac.

    Here's the deal.

Apple makes a very fine machine. Todays Macbooks and especially Macbook Pro's are one of the most reliable laptops in the mass market today. They also have great customer support and offer a very efficient (on your hardware) and very easy to use (good for your patience) operating system. A lot of people swear by their Macs. I'm not one of them. I just have a lot of respect for what they do. I've found that provided you can spare a bit of time adjusting to OS10, you'll likely end up very satisfied with your purchase.

As an aside; There is something of a myth that has been proliferated about Macs being inherently superior when it comes to security and virus protection. Put simply; its hogwash. OS-10 is just as vulnerable as Windows, if not even more so. It's nothing more than a numbers game, is all. Why take all the time and effort to write malicious code for such a small platform of users when you can open up any random documented "cook book" on how to infect the great big (and common) elephant (eg: Windows users).

So, do you need any anti-virus / spyware protection? Probably not. Not only are the odds in your favor of not running into an issue, but if you have common sense and a bit of insight as to what to avoid while browsing the web or checking your mail - you can avoid those things entirely, be it Apple or PC based.

So the bottom line? Apple's makes a great machine. I may end up with a MacBook Pro in the near future. If I decide to go with a Windows laptop, it'll likely be a Toshiba, as they are the only ones in the mass market that have, and continue to make a consistently solid and reliable windows based laptop. And.. the 64bit Windows Ultimate is not thatbad... shock shock, surprise, surprise..

It's all in what applications you use. If it wasn't for work and games, my personal option would be to run Linux. Free, easy to setup, lots of free applications, and very stable and secure. Leopard after all, is *nix platform with Apples proprietary code so they can charge an arm and a leg for their outdated hardware.
